I inherited my grandfather's split bamboo rods, there's all these tiny tins of Mucilin. He even had one bolted to his creel, I got that too. Do people still use this stuff? Thanks

Thanks. That's very interesting. I googled it and there's plenty of English sellars of the product. I'd never heard of it either. The last time Grandpa went fly fishing was probably in the 60s so all his stuff is from then and earlier. Whey he needed so many tins of this stuff, who knows.

I used it to treat dry flies. It helped them to float higher. Take a little bit of it and melt it between your fingers and apply it to the hackles. It always made a mess, you couldn't wash it off in the water so you usually ended up wiping the excess on your fishing vest if you forgot to bring a rag. When spray silicone came along, live became a lot easier. I also used it to make leaders float higher. It was good stuff but messy.

I use the red tin on my silk lines. The green has silicone and is good for modern plastic lines but will damage silk or braided oiled nylon lines.

I've used it with good results. However for bamboo rods avoid the green label as the silicone will play havoc if you ever need to do a full or partial revarnish.

Pretty handy for dressing yarn indicators as well as fly lines.
