Picked up a 1959 M70 in 300 H&H yesterday with two new boxes of Nosler trophy grade 180gr. Rifle has been honestly hunted, but not abused. It did have a butt pad installed, but other than that is all original. Seller said he bought it from a friend what hunted it in Alaska when he lived there. i think $1400 was a fair price, considering the ammo is going for $100 a box these days.

These are wonderful rifles, accurate generally. The 300 H&H is one of the best 30 mags, easy to reload and efficient with powder. The pre 64 M70s in this caliber are classics.

Had a chance at a .300 H&H many moons back. Kicked myself many times for not grabbing it.
I've wanted one ever since. I wanted one because that was the first cartridge that actually requires a "belted" case. Also, it was one of the first "consistent" winners of 1000 yard (Wimbledon?) shooting matches. ....and it's just a great, nostalgic cartridge! πŸ˜‰
What I "REALLY" wanted to do was buy a Ruger #1 in .308 Win and have it rechambered to .300 H&H.
But alas....time has taken it's toll. Even if I had one, I couldn't shoot it! Neither shoulder can handle than much recoil anymore! ☹️

P.S. - might I say "Congrats!" on what sounds like a really neat firearm!

I did quite a bit of loading manual research on the .300 H&H.
Though it might not be as "fast" as some of the more modern cartridges, when comparing advertised velocity vs powder charge for a specific bullet weight, the H&H could do just as much with less powder as the Win and Wby magnums.

ONLY about 40 years too late! LOL!

If I could have gotten it done back when time and dollars allowed it. I wanted the rifle to carry the cartridges original designation: "Holland's Super .30"

BTW, since I never got to shoot one, how is the recoil?
Sharp jab or heavy push?

I had a .458 Win Mag Ruger M77. I was surprised that the recoil was a heavy push and not that unpleasant.
I also had a .300 Win Mag Ruger M77 that would absolutely cross your eyes! Recoil was vile!

There were two other odd ball rounds with a Hornady headstamp I shot into the hill behind my house. They were pleasant and the report was not that bad either....

I inherited a Ruger M77 300 WM with the Zietel (?) stock from my Dad that is extremely unpleasant to shot....ridiculous comes to mind, but my Dad loved watching people shoot it for the first time.

The old .300 H&H Magnum has a lot to offer. I personally would love to build one on a 1917 Enfield, don’t ask me why.

Life is short....Do it!!!

Cartridge OAL will be a challenge, but where there is a will, there is a way....

I have a bunch of 300 H&H's and generally they are pleasant to shoot. The old pre-war with the steel butt plate is the worst one. I have had 2 No.1's over the years, one with sights and one without. Neither were tack drivers. My old 721 Remington probably shoots the best but I have several model 70's that are darn close.

The 1917 works great for cartridges like that. I've had a 300WBY magnum built on one that I regret letting go of. Down to a 308 Norma magnum that I will not sell. Life is too short, you should buy/build one. That would be sweet!!!

Looks like a damn nice pre war!! What is the year of manufacture on that one? '40, '41? Sweet rifle, thanks for sharing.

I picked up a P64M70 a couple years ago that looked worn out. Found it still shoots bug holes!

Do the build on the Enfield P-14 instead of the P-17, you won't have to machine the bolt face. Since the P-14 was chambered in 303, it's bolt face is already .540. I have both a P-14 and P-17, both are stout guns! My P-14 is chambered in 375 H&H and I just took it to Africa and had great success with it.

Dammit....it happened again. Bought another 300 Magnum, this one born in 1949. Excellent shape but does have a vintage red Winchester recoil pad. My 'smith stuck his borescope down the tube and said if it had more that a box of ammunition run through it, he would be surprised. I will have to work around the 22G rear sight to mount a scope, though. Couldn't pass it up at $1,000 cash....

That 22G rear is a pain for scope mounting. Your'e better off pulling it off and replacing it with a flip down. Hang on to your original sight though. Those are worth some money!!!!
