Picked up a 1959 M70 in 300 H&H yesterday with two new boxes of Nosler trophy grade 180gr. Rifle has been honestly hunted, but not abused. It did have a butt pad installed, but other than that is all original. Seller said he bought it from a friend what hunted it in Alaska when he lived there. i think $1400 was a fair price, considering the ammo is going for $100 a box these days.

These are wonderful rifles, accurate generally. The 300 H&H is one of the best 30 mags, easy to reload and efficient with powder. The pre 64 M70s in this caliber are classics.

Had a chance at a .300 H&H many moons back. Kicked myself many times for not grabbing it. I've wanted one ever since. I wanted one because that was the first cartridge that actually requires a "belted" case. Also, it was one of the first "consistent" winners of 1000 yard (Wimbledon?) shooting matches. ....and it's just a great, nostalgic cartridge! π What I "REALLY" wanted to do was buy a Ruger #1 in .308 Win and have it rechambered to .300 H&H. But alas....time has taken it's toll. Even if I had one, I couldn't shoot it! Neither shoulder can handle than much recoil anymore! βΉοΈ
P.S. - might I say "Congrats!" on what sounds like a really neat firearm!
I did quite a bit of loading manual research on the .300 H&H. Though it might not be as "fast" as some of the more modern cartridges, when comparing advertised velocity vs powder charge for a specific bullet weight, the H&H could do just as much with less powder as the Win and Wby magnums.

ππππππππππ ONLY about 40 years too late! LOL! If I could have gotten it done back when time and dollars allowed it. I wanted the rifle to carry the cartridges original designation: "Holland's Super .30" BTW, since I never got to shoot one, how is the recoil? Sharp jab or heavy push? I had a .458 Win Mag Ruger M77. I was surprised that the recoil was a heavy push and not that unpleasant. I also had a .300 Win Mag Ruger M77 that would absolutely cross your eyes! Recoil was vile!

There were two other odd ball rounds with a Hornady headstamp I shot into the hill behind my house. They were pleasant and the report was not that bad either....
I inherited a Ruger M77 300 WM with the Zietel (?) stock from my Dad that is extremely unpleasant to shot....ridiculous comes to mind, but my Dad loved watching people shoot it for the first time.

The old .300 H&H Magnum has a lot to offer. I personally would love to build one on a 1917 Enfield, donβt ask me why.

I have a bunch of 300 H&H's and generally they are pleasant to shoot. The old pre-war with the steel butt plate is the worst one. I have had 2 No.1's over the years, one with sights and one without. Neither were tack drivers. My old 721 Remington probably shoots the best but I have several model 70's that are darn close.

I've had a 300WBY magnum built on one that I regret letting go of. Down to a 308 Norma magnum that I will not sell. Life is too short, you should buy/build one. That would be sweet!!!
I try to stick with the basics, they do so well. Nothing fancy mind you, just plain jane will get it done with style. You want to see an animal drop right now? Shoot him in the ear hole. BSA MAGA

I picked up a P64M70 a couple years ago that looked worn out. Found it still shoots bug holes! My next elk gun....

Do the build on the Enfield P-14 instead of the P-17, you won't have to machine the bolt face. Since the P-14 was chambered in 303, it's bolt face is already .540. I have both a P-14 and P-17, both are stout guns! My P-14 is chambered in 375 H&H and I just took it to Africa and had great success with it.

Dammit....it happened again. Bought another 300 Magnum, this one born in 1949. Excellent shape but does have a vintage red Winchester recoil pad. My 'smith stuck his borescope down the tube and said if it had more that a box of ammunition run through it, he would be surprised. I will have to work around the 22G rear sight to mount a scope, though. Couldn't pass it up at $1,000 cash....

Kansas That 22G rear is a pain for scope mounting. Your'e better off pulling it off and replacing it with a flip down. Hang on to your original sight though. Those are worth some money!!!!

Good to hear any happy ending, especially where a pre '64 Winchester 70 acquisition is involved! No personal idea of values today, but wild guess as such as a Thousand $, good deal in today's inflated world of values with guns seeming a class leader! Any vintage pad if factory on the 300 H&H Standard Model would have been special order. Many such rifles in heavy chamberings have had pads added and the 'presumption' sans provenance, running to aftermarket. But anyas era original, almost surely hard as rock at best and far more likely 'toast' reflecting considerable deterioration. Rare exception perhaps 'safe queen' stowed muzzle down might exempt rule, yet still typically 'mummified'. Diehard collectors deem "keeping 'it' original". Most "users as hunters/shooters" vote for quality Winchester red replica replacement properly fitted. Lot f nice Mag guns spoken in this Thread and feeling sympathy of eras past recollections and physical limitations nowadays of age! Big, Me Too! Again, congrats to all on nice guns shared & good luck! Best! John

Great idea...and I have, i believe based on Rule's book page 165, a Marble No.69 sight left over from a previous project. Any vintage pad if factory on the 300 H&H Standard Model would have been special order. I don't think it was factory, but it is older. The current LOP sans recoil pad is about 12 3/8, give or take. Thanks, Kansan

Unfortunately, the Marble No. 69 is too loose in the dovetail...I guess I will run it scoped without a rear sight. Don't really want to run high rings with a low comb stock.

Several years ago I handled a P64M70SG in 300H&H, used but not abused. Slightly off topic, but did Ruger ever offer the M77 tang safety rifle in 300H&H?

I think the standard 77 is too short for the .300 H & H.

Kansan Be careful! The 300 H&H is an addicting caliber. I bought one about 30 years ago and somehow another 8-10 of them have migrated into my home.
