Who remembers them? I had forgotten about them, then tonight there was some foreign, subtitled movie on late. There was a guy on a cycle with the kick start on the wrong side. My mind instantly said, "Bultaco", and then there it was on the side of the bike.

I remember them. Never road one.

I've ridden a 250 Bultaco, I didn't like them as much as a Honda or a Penton.

This one’s for sale locally and I’m driving myself nuts talking myself out of buying it.

One of my dad's friends had one back in the 70's! Different looking and the only one I remember seeing in person!

I saw one back in the 80’s. 250 I believe.

Back in the '70s I had a Husqvarna WR125 and a CR250 and a Yamaha MX125.

A buddy's dad had a Bultaco 360 Pursang? I'm not sure.

Mine were weird in that I had to have the clutch out to kick start, a pain when you stall on the side of a mountain.

His was weird with the shift on right and brake on the left..

Probably the first motorcycle any of my male cousins ever drove.

I had another Spanish bike in the 70's, the Montesa 250. Shift on the wrong side and famous for not starting. They were fast but not as fast and light as the Honda Elsinores or Husky's. Happy times and broken bones!

One of my childhood friends rode Bultaco Astros. Very good handling machines.

I do remember the Bultaco. Never rode one. Had a Triumph Cub that had the shifter on the right. Forget which side the clutch lever was on. Guy I bought that bike from didn't have fingers on one hand so he removed the handlebar brake lever for that hand. I rode it that way until I sold it. That thing was also hard to start. Tickle the carb and kick 'til you finally got it going.

Along with Ossa, Montesa, and a few others. They had a reputation as good handling when others did not. Honda's Elsinore put an end to a lot of smaller manufacturers I think.

Looks like a Trackmaster frame.

They were very attractive bike. Their street bike the Metralla lapped the IoM at 100mph in maybe 68? You could buy a factory race kit for it. Chain enclosed in rubber and a pump system to add oil to the gas. Light, agile and fast for the times.

I had a Bultaco Pursang and Alpina. The Pursang was a hot bike In its day and once you got used to the right hand shift and left hand brake, it was a great bike to ride.

The Pursang was moto cross and the Alpina was an enduro. Both great bikes…

This brings back many memories and I would read the Jody's Box (Jody Weisel) article at the back of Motocross Action first thing when we got it each month. He had a great writing style and very funny.

In 1968 I got interested in Motocross racing so I bought a 250cc Bultaco Pursang (thoroughbred) because they were winning all the 250cc motocross and flat track races around the world. It only cost $860 brand new. I wanted an 440cc El Bandito but the dealer said the professionals were having problems riding them because they had so much low end torque.

I practiced for a few weeks and went to a Motocross race (it was actually a cow trail through the woods) in Bulverde, Texas. At this race there were no classes and everybody raced at the same time. A 250cc Bultaco Pursang won the race by a huge margin. On the first practice lap I ran off course and ran head on into a small 4" diameter live oak. It bent the front shocks and turned the wheel into an egg shape. I jumped up and started the engine but it wouldn't go because the front wheel was against the engine.

I wasn't seriously injured because I had a good helmet and the handle bars were bolted to the front shocks so they would give if you crashed. I didn't have a full face helmet so the right side of my face got skinned up. I was a little sore the next day but was able to go to work. I decided to get it fixed and sell it since I had to work for a living and needed all my arms and legs to function.

All my friends made fun of me because I bought a motorcycle Bull Taco. Bultaco is a combination of the owner's last name Bulta and Company. I loved riding that motorcycle.
