I have been trying to find a CZ in 17 Hornet but with prices north of $1000, I have started thinking about going semi-custom.

Which actions should I be looking for? I've always been a Remington 700 guy but realize it isn't really an option. A quick look at common rim diameters doesn't look like there are many options for a donor.

Suggestions?

Can't speak to bolt gun choices but to me .17 Hornet cries out for a Martini Cadet single shot action. Don't knock it 'til you tried it.

Mine are both 17AH, pretty much the same thing. One is a 20" T/C contender carbine. This design is about the handiest and safest truck gun you can imagine. Small, weighs nothing, and no recoil. I've beern using this one since about '92 and it's a favorite. Doing it today I'd have Mike Bellm at Bellmtcs do me a barrel. The other is a Ruger 77/22 that began as a Hornet, which was boring, then became a K Hornet, still boring and never shot all that well. Sent to Wessinger custom and made into 17AH and now the thing is now very accurate and fun to shoot. Unfortunately Mr. Wessinger passed away some years ago. That small Ruger action is perfect, only problem could be finding one, and then someone to do the work. The Martini is very cool, but finding one of those and someone to do the conversion would be a real hunt. If you don't mind the break open single shot, a T/C contender carbine is a good way to go.

If I could find a sporter weight I'd grab it but most of what I've seen was a heavy varmint platform. Savage has their model 25 but those are pretty ugly. That may be my solution to get started while I search for a CZ or build one.

A Martini Cadet would be nice but I'm looking for a bolt gun. I actually have an Encore slug gun I'm not using, that may be the short term solution.

Back when they were available for about $700 I bought a Browning Micro in a .22 Hornet to convert to a.17 but I did the unthinkable and shot it as is. Now it wears a nice scope and a suppressor and is one of my favorites. Good luck

If you could find a Ruger, more power to you. Their varmint weight still isn't very heavy. Don't know how long those things are but cut to 20" would be perfect, that's all the barrel length you need for that cartridge.

the Ruger`s have the best clip / magazines and work very well , i just purchased a nice used Ruger 17 Hornet off the campfire . i also have a 22 K-hornet in a Ruger 77 ,i cut barrel to 18 inches and that shoots good. the Ruger Hornet 17 i am just starting to reload for , brass is hard to fine but i found some used brass now.

Had a couple Ruger hornets, a 22, and a 17, both were trash accuracy wise, after shimming the bolt, trigger jobs, and other supposed accuracy enhancements, they still shot poorly. And before you say it, I have many R 700s, Sakos, and Anschutz rifles that are easy sub .75” guns. It’s not the shooter.
An alternative is re barrel a browning or Winchester 1885 single shot 22 hornet, or re barrel a used Anschutz 22 hornet. Seems though there are issues with rebarrelling an Anschutz.
Or go right to the top and buy an Anschutz 1771 chambered in 17 hornet.
Good luck.

I think PTG makes a 700 replacement bolt with a Hornet bolt face. Make your own magazine system, or single-shot it.

I would look for a Ruger 77/17 Hornet or get a contender barrel if it truly has to be a Hornet, or skip the .17 Hornet and go for .17 Fireball or Mach IV on a Remington 700 or clone.

Redleg, I have a Ruger 77/22 Hornet that I rebarreled to 17 Hornet. I still have the original 22 Hornet barrel. I plan to list it here on the campfire for sale when I get home but that will be next week. If you have any interest in it, send me a pm and I'll get photos for you when I get home and before I list it.

In theory, couldn't a 223 action with a shortened magazine work?
