I sure what you are seeing is flag on the landing gear.

I've been to the Pueblo Mountain B-24 crash site in SE Oregon.

There is a crash site like that northwest of Shawnee Colo. near where I used to live. It can be seen with a good bino or spotting scope right from Shawnee. I think it lies at around 11,000 feet and is also in a boulder field; and hard to get to unless trespassing is involved. I know a guy that has a connecting rod with piston from one of the engines. Supposedly the crew bailed out, and one was found clear over in the next valley, a LONG ways from the crash.

Neat hike. There is an A-6 Intruder wreckage on top of a mesa near Oatman, AZ. Been meaning to make that hike.

Been on a few sheep hunts near Oatman and had not heard that. Do you mind sharing the name of the mesa? That could be a fun winter hike.

Black Mesa. Exactly where, I’m not sure. Vegas hikers and aviation archaeology sites have pictures of it.

In the Fitzpatrick wilderness near Dubois WY there is a B-24 crash site. It augered in at night during poor weather on a training flight in the late 40’s I think, can’t remember exactly what I read about it. It’s an easy walk and there lots of wreckage.

Plane supposedly had millions in gold as payment for a ship. 6 crew and 24 passengers. Crashed on Mount Sanford in sight of Glennallen.

Book is not well-written but the story is good. They proved it was the right plane, but it had prior visitors. 1948.

I often see the sunlight reflecting off that plane wreckage on the SF Peaks

Walked through that one back in 2000.
I was amazed at how much was still out there and not wasted away.

I am always glad to hear that a plane crash site is not picked clean, to me it would be they ultimate disrespect. If someone said to me hey look what I brought back from X site, I would grab it and use it as a weapon against them.

Other than that, I just came back from the Woodstock fair and am still able to hit the bell on the High Striker "no not the kiddie one"
at 60 years plus I was pretty proud of myself. There were some half my age that didn't even come close.

The flats are about 8 miles away and about 4,000 feet lower in elevation.

Apparently, the bomber was on a nighttime training mission, was 15 miles off course, and essentially flew into the side of the mountain. I imagine they didn’t know they were gonna hit until seconds- maybe even a half minute before they did, but couldn’t maneuver out of the way. Flying into the mountain going about 180 miles an hour.

Had a relative that flew bombers for the RCAF in early days of WW Ii
Returned to the States after we declared war. Flew his B24 into mountain in NH.
I think it happened often with the avionics available then.
