I’ve found a few nice G serial XTR MODEL 7mm Rems I want. However they have plastic stocks. I hate that. Is the stainless steel finish on these as nice as the finish on the ones that came with walnut stocks? Also, can I get a walnut stock to fit these guns ? If so, where, and how much can I expect to pay? If a stock is 200 bucks then I don’t want to go spending 900 on the gun.

The stainless should be the same. Not sure what you mean by “finish”. Expect to pay more than $200 for a nice factory stock. They didn’t make many pushfeed stainless rifles, so they are somewhat collectible.

Picking nits, but these pushfeeds won’t actually be labeled XTR. They came out in the early 90s and were made for 2 years just prior to the introduction of the classic stainless.

Yeah his post was throwing me off because I don’t think they are XTR models. For a couple reasons: they were made after the “XTR” designation was dropped and also because it’s a stainless pushfeed.

I’m a bit confused myself. The rifles I am exclusively looking at are post 64 CRF rifles. I am not looking at push feed.

Where did I go wrong with my words to cause confusion? I need to make sure I know what the heck I’m talking about and I’m clearly not as versed as I should be. I guess I got XTR stuck in my head because I looked at one and now realize it was push feed which is why I wasn’t interested.

Either way, the rifles I’m interested in are CRF “classic” rifles. I thought XTR was one I found but perhaps not. All I know is that I want walnut and wanted to see if it was feasible to replace the plastic stocked stainless crf with a different stock.

If you buy them I maybe interested in a syn stock.

Thanks! Nothing wrong with geeking out. It’s an important distinction that I didn’t realize until now. I appreciate it. And the link is one like I’m looking for. I’m after blued as well. I just have to watch and look for them.

In terms of the stock, do I need simply a long action classic stock? What about floor plate details? I imagine not just any old classic stock will fit right.

Those were long action, standard sporter contour with 2 pc bottom metal. They show up from time to time on eBay.

Push feed and crf stocks are generally interchangeable. The mag boxes are different. Most New Haven stocks will be inlet for 2 piece; later New Haven stocks *may* be inlet for 1 piece bottom metal. BACO stocks *will* be inlet for 1 piece.

Hopefully that’s clear; I’m waiting on my first pot of coffee to brew!

No problem. When you said “XTR”, that had me thinking it was a pushfeed. Which all XTR models are. Then after further thinking about it, as AK explained, it couldn’t be an XTR because they we’re basically discontinued in 1989. The stainless pushfeed was introduced sometime in ‘92, with the reintroduction of the CRF, which was not available since 1963. Except for a few custom shop CRF rifles that were built from around 1989 (according to some). The post 64 CRF Newhaven rifles were known as “Classics”, since they used what they referred to as the pre 64 controlled round feed action. Even though it was slightly modified and also not machined exactly like the original. They also had som MIM parts, which some don’t like. So not an exact prev64 action.

Also, don’t even get me started on the newest rendition, which some gun writers here even refer to as the “classic”, as the last classic was made in 2006. The BACO is a Browning and will never be referred to as a “classic” action model 70. No matter how much a gun writer here writes it. That’s just facts.

So when guys say “XTR”, most times they are talking about the pushfeed. Also your question about the finish would have one believe you were talking about the extra care and polishing the “XTR” rifles received.

Understandable. What I was getting at is I am surprised you didn’t comment in the other thread. I like Brazos thinking on finding a nice factory walnut stock. That stainless looks great with the walnut. Have one myself. Great/popular combination.
