I saw this You Tube video on waterproofing a tarp, boots, clothing. etc. and so I gave it a try with a pair of boots. I bought a 10 oz tube of 100% silicone and a can of Naptha,,,,can also use Mineral Spirits. Mixed the entire tube and half a quart of the Naptha in a plastic jar with a lid on it. Shake it well to get it mixed then took a paint brush and applied to the outside of my boots, being careful to coat real good. After a day of drying, the boots do not leak at all. Wore them in high wet grass on a dove hunt this pass Saturday and at end of day.....no wet socks and perfectly dry. Just thought would share this for you guys. Think you can buy silicone in a can but cheaper to mix your own and do several items.

It will be interesting to read how they wear. We had 100% food grade silicone oil in drums back in the shop to lubricate the machinery. Guys thought it would work great to waterproof their boots and it probably did. The only trouble was that over time it turned even thick Sorel boot leather into soft mush. What ever ankle support and abrasion resistance those boots once had, they didn't have anymore. I'd be kind of careful with your "coating real good."

It's a good trick to make a tarp out of an old sheet but I would go snow seal on the boots.

The desert is a true treasure for him who seeks refuge from men and the evil of men.
In it is contentment
In it is death and all you seek
