A 2004 Polaris 700 ATV was just offered to me for sale and I thought I'd post here and see if I learn a little about the thing.
It only has1700 miles(and looks like it!) Starts, runs great, everything functions as it should has a winch and a new plow.
He's asking $4000.00
Red flags to look for? Too high of price or sound fair?
Thoughts and insights would be appreciated.

Do you need a new ATV?
Are you interested in Polaris if you do?

I'm think9ng I'd like an ATV for deer hunting. I could also use it at my shop for snow plowing on occasion. Not really in the market for a new one.

ATV's are handy for both, tho I'd prefer a tractor for plowing depending on size of driveway.

For me, it's just that everyone I've ever known with a Polaris has had issues. I've never had issues with a Yamaha. For me, maybe not others, I'd never buy a Polaris. Ever.

I have a Polaris Sportsman 570 and a Polaris Ranger 900. To date, I’ve only changed fluids and batteries in them, until last week. My son submarined my 570 last year in a glacial fed river. After finally getting all the fluids drained, new plugs, etc. it runs great now. I use the 570 to plow my driveway in the winter and it does great. Just had my first issue with the Ranger, had to replace the left rear wheel bearings. With that being said, most people I know that have issues with Polaris all put bigger tires, etc on them and broke axels. If I was buying new today though, I’d buy Yamaha or Honda.

I have a 700, have had lot of problems with it.

I have a polaris 800 2007 and a 2001 honda foreman. If I was looking for a used atv I would find a used honda. I bet I have spend 10 times on the polaris as the honda. I am thinking about a SXS and if I do buy one I will get rid of the polaris and keep the honda. I love riding the polaris but the honda is bullet proof.

That era of Polaris 600/700's have stator issues, replacing the factory Stator is big bucks but there's an aftermarket company that has a bypass that has worked well on two machines I've had my hands on, one of which I bought new and still have.

My machine other than that issue has been trouble free for almost 20 years now.

I had a couple of 800's of that vintage (one was an X2), so did a couple of friends. Decent machines with some nice features, but they run too hot and we all had battery and fuel pump issues.

Never had good luck with my Polaris ATVs. Haven’t had one in maybe 8 years. I’ll stick with Honda and Kawasaki from now on.

The biggest red flag to look for is if it is a Polaris. Now that you have that out of the way, 3 years ago it would have been overpriced at $4k. Now it’s pretty normal.

They’re twin cylinders, make planet of power. And have a great ride, when you’re able to ride it. Expect electrical problems.

We have: all bought new

2 Sportsman 500 HO 2006 mdls...replaced one belt

1 500 X2 2007 mdl...recall replaced the ECM

1 2008 700 Ranger...fuel pump and Lt R axle bearing

1 2009 RZR 800...no repairs

All have been used plenty in tough country

With my often broken back I opted for the Polaris ride. I tried them all, and the Polaris machines were kinder on me, much better ride. If Hondas weren't like riding a buckboard on a washboard road I'd have a stable of Hondas. They're bulletproof.

Couple guys I've ridden with have Polaris. Faster and better ride than my Honda, and has left them stranded several times. Wish Honda would copy the suspension, but that's about it

I left Polaris years ago. The early Razors did not have enough ground clearance for mountain trails. I ended up having several CanAm Commanders and really liked them. I am on my second Maverick Trail now and really like them. We like to run the 50 inch trails in Wyoming and avoid all of the hotrods that run the normal trails. It will take a little time but I think that 50 inch trails will take over the wider trails to limit the use of the larger side by sides. Not everyone misuses the regulations, but mostly the sooped up machines. When I see anyone off of trails, I try to get info and videos of them and turn them in. We have camped with a gentleman that has worked for both companies and he said that he would never commit to a Polaris again for various reasons, especially the welding of the frames.

Polaris i wouldn't own one stick with Honda, Yamaha and Kawasaki.
