I flew today with three shotguns in my case to Canada. Departed from New Orleans.
United agent asked if the guns were unloaded, then placed the signed orange tag in the case.
I locked the case (non TSA) they put it on a conveyor and I did not see it until I arrived in Edmonton. TSA maybe XRayed it but they did not open it and look inside. Flying out of Cleveland that’s what they did. Flying out of Idaho falls that’s what they did. Here in Alaska only place I seen where you have to take it tsa for inspection. Larger airports with higher volume of passengers want to just get the baggage through. If something doesn't look obviously out of place or suspicious they push it through.

I fly with my pistol nearly every time I fly. Not one time have they asked me to open the case. They just have me stick that card in it and I shove it in my checked bag.

Do you recall TSA recording the specifics of the firearm? No, nothing like that. I traveled with a couple of shotguns, last year, and I had them in gun socks inside the hard case. They never removed the gun socks to get a better look at the shotguns. They could have been loaded, for all they knew. They weren't, of course. They have swabbed the case, on occasion, and they made a note of it on their clipboard. But, I didn't see them recording make/model/serial number of the contents of the case. They didn't look the guns over closely enough to gather that kind of information. Could be like checking for restriced items in certain localities? Or documenting serial numbers for some database or anything of the sort? Not that I've seen. I had suppressors on the last couple of firearms I traveled with, and they didn't seem to care. They didn't ask for paperwork, or anything like that. Here in Alaska only place I seen where you have to take it tsa for inspection. Besides Anchorage, TSA agents in Minneapolis and Dallas both have opened the case and looked everything over.
Thoroughly enjoying Alaska since 2001.

I've never had TSA check a smaller handgun case, either. If the pistol case fit in my regular checked bag, I locked it, stuck it back in the bag, and that bag went on the conveyor like all the rest. I've only had TSA inspect the long gun cases, and that was always done at the oversized baggage area.

Alaska Air at Sky Harbor (Phoenix) is by far the worst I have dealt with. Get there early and make sure your bag gets checked before you take the nine-mile hike to the gate. They have a history of telling you the guns have cleared before they actually have.
In the early days of TSA an agent in Sea-Tac insisted I prove my double guns had "plugs." I would bet someone set her up.
Mark Begich, Joaquin Jackson, and Heller resistance... Three huge reasons to worry about the NRA.

Great contributions! Much appreciated. I'm satisfied that I can take my top secret meat maker!
Again, thanks to all that took the time and effort to share their firsthand experiences!
DanInAlaska and M3Taco, mega thanks!

I’ve flown around Alaska on Ravn, a small commercial airline with a .375 with me on the plane. That was surprising but the way it should be, imo

Just checked my shot gun in Philadelphia international airport. Besides opening the case and signing the paper that goes in side is they make you wait at the check in counter for about 5 minutes to make sure it cleared through the scan. The case is locked and they want you close by if they need the case opened.

Right on. Thanks.
Seems consistent that neither the TSA nor the airlines are making a record of firearm specifics.

Seems consistent that neither the TSA nor the airlines are making a record of firearm specifics. They don’t have the time or the resources to be collecting a firearm database.
