A guy at the table next to me at a gunshow has a Pre 64 Model 100 in .284 in absolutely mint condition and claims it is unfired, and the way it looks I wouldn't doubt it.
He's asking $2000.

Not worth it. You sure it’s pre 64? Ask him if the firing pin has been replaced, due to the recall they had on them.

Still not a $2k rifle. 100s don't bring the kind of money an 88 would, even in 284. Basket weave checking is a dead giveaway for a post 64 so at least the pre-64 bit is right.

JMO but I would not pay more than $11-1200 for that rifle. I just picked up a pre-64 100 in 308 in mint condition for $800. The 284 definitely adds value, but not that much and it's too hard to prove shot vs not.

Anyway, YMMV.

260k model 100 we’re made they say around 30k were made in 284 for the entire run. Pre64 100 in 284 around 4K were made. Making pre 64 in the 284 a very rare bird. Is it worth 2k?? That’s up to you and how bad you want it. Me personally I save my money and hunt down a pre64 88 in a 284.

The guy is about 1k high on most of his guns, but this one sure is drool worthy. It's a beauty.

I figured it was priced high too but it didn't cost me squat to ask you guys about it.

10yrs ago mint 100 in 284 were bringing 2k. For the 88’s 13.8% of the production was in 284. The Winchester gurus say you can apply that to the 100’s total production of 284’s as well. So rough 39K 88’s were chambered in 284 and roughly 36k were made in 284. 36k might be a little generous, Bert over on Winchester Arms collectors association says it’s closer to 30k. So in the big picture around 70k 284 we’re made. The only other time Winchester ever chambered the 284 again was in early 90’s in classic dbm model 70. Most say only 200 were made. So the 284 is truly a rare bird in any Winchester rifle. Again would I buy I probably not because I prefer a 88 in a 284 myself.
