I was at a local show this past weekend and a fellow was walking around with an 1895 flatside with a pistol grip stock. I have never seen an 1895 with a pistol grip. Rarity or modified? The lever didn't look to be modified.

Pistol grip 1895s were made by the factory. Like most deluxe models, they are not as commonly seen as standard models. Flatside and a Pistol grip is a nice combo.

If I remember correctly, only flatsides had pistol grips, other than Col. Whelen's James Howe built rifle.

I tried to buy it from him but we was way too far apart. Not being sure if it was right or not. First one I've ever seen or handled. Rare enough that it fits in my like category!

The calibers for the flat side 1895 were 30 US (Krag), 38-72, 40-72.
The 40-72 resembled the 405, but loaded in BP and bulk early powders.
Not in the 405 class.
Winchester did make a pistol grip flatside 1895-and it probably is a special order rarer rifle-with figured walnut stock.
Used to have a takedown special order in 405. It had been to India and back. First bull elk-used this rifle many years ago.

I have a .38-72 and a Krag. Love shooting them. Just never seen a pistol grip on a 1895. I did leave him my contact info.
