Battery replacement question. Do I have to buy from Polaris or can I get one from autozone etc? the last Polaris battery I bough has only lasted 1.5 years. Can I charge a 4 wheeler battery with a car battery charger on a 2 amp setting (slow charge)? What say you?

Walmart will have one that fits. All of them are made by 1 of only a couple manufacturers in the US. All the brands buy from them and put their own label on them.
I bought Polaris RZR used in '16. I put in a new battery this spring. It still had the same Polaris battery that it had when I bought it. That's 7 years. Polaris batteries aren't all bad. A 2 amp charger will do it but it'll take a while if the battery is low. If it's a 'smart' charger, it will go through a charging sequence that's optimum for the best battery life.

No, and I've never had a Polaris branded battery last very long. Go to an auto parts store and get an AGM type replacement. They cost more up front but worth it IMO.
Get an updated smart charger, even a 1.25 amp motorcycle charger will work. I ended up with a 4 bank/1.25 amp per bank charger/tender in my garage for all the motorcycle/atv/lawn tractor/snowblower/generator/etc batteries that don't get used year-round.

If your ‘12 Sportsman 400 has the battery in the same place as our ‘09, it is an absolute nightmare to change. 1.5 years is pretty short, but even after a couple years I start carrying a boost jump starter with that Polaris because I just don’t trust it. There is an 800 mA battery tender on that ATV when ever it isn’t being ridden. (about $35.00 at Walmart) I too went to an AGM battery last time and so far so good. We put in a Yuasa sealed AGM YTX14AH-BS ($129.95 at the dealer) if it is the same battery location as yours. I’m told they changed that location on the later models.
My other auto is a .45

Its location does make it a pain to change. 110$ for a battery at the Polaris dealer. It is the kind you have to ad water to if it gets low. Next time I’ll be buying from batteries plus or the like.
