Bought a Ruger Bisley Hunter 44mag and decided it needed a scope. I had never scoped a handgun before and got a 4x Leupold for it. Now I see that was a bad choice and I’m over magnified with a very limited field of view, thinking I should go with a red dot instead. Right now I’m thinking of getting an Ultradot 1” gen2 with a 2moa dot and using the factory rings. Or should I get a rail and a RMR style sight? What have you guys done with your 44’s? Thanks

I tried a scope at first too and found a red dot is much more useful on a hunting revolver. My standard handle .45 Colt Blackhawk has been a very productive meat maker. I've had a Vortex Venom on a BSA no drill mount for maybe 5-10 years. I'm sure there are "better" options available. I don't think you can go too far wrong.

I have a Ruger Bisley Hunter 44mag also. I tried a Ultradot tube style on it but in the end a traditional Leupold 2x won out.
Otoh, my other Ruger 44 and 45lc wear Holosuns with Wiegand mini mounts. The same for a couple of 357's and a MK IV.

My Ruger Bisley Hunter .44 currently wears a Weaver 2X scope in the supplied rings. I tried an Ulte Dit, but although I use Red Dots on seraveral other handguns, the scope seemed best for me on this one.

For practical field use, especially on a target that me be moving and/or partially obscured, I think the red dot is the way to go. I have tried the magnified optics and they work but for me, I find I do better with an RDO.

I love my Holosun on my Ruger mkiii, I’d love one on a 1911, but I hate to think about violating my Bisley .45 Colt with such a contraption. That said, my eyes REALLY like the red dot and that mini rail makes mounting look easy…..

I have not tried a dot yet on any gun.
I have a 2-6x32 variable on a Savage Striker. Anything above 2x is useless, except from the bench with bipod.
I also purchsed a SBH hunter in 41 mag almost 20 years ago. I use a 2x20 Nikon monarch on it. I can shoot it offhand or in any supported position.
Good luck with your search for a dot.
I think you would also find a 2x20 scope infinitely more useable than the 4x.
