Does anyone know if adding a 4 1/2" barrel extension to a 12" AR pistol barrel will render the resulting 16 1/2" barrel legal when using a shoulder stock? The extension is just a screw-on hollow tube of the same OD as the barrel, but it's not rifled or grooved in any way. I can't seem to find a reference for something like this, and the ATF doesn't seem interested in returning my questions.

Has to be permanently attached to the barrel - typically pinned and welded.

The 11.5 carbine barrels with the 5.5 inch "muzzle device" have been this way for decades.

No way I’d take the velocity loss and still wind up with a 16” barrel.

But yes pin and weld would make it legal.

You can do a form 1 e-file and make an SBR with it. Pay $200 tax stamp and wait about 45-60 days for approval if it’s legal in your state.

It couldn't legally be removable so there wouldn't be a point to it.

Either SBR a lower or buy a 16" upper are your two options
