MadDog, that pain is caused by stretching of the ureter.

The Autonomic nervous system of the visceral organs refers pain to the Somatic nervous system. Those internal organs don’t feel a stick, just stretch. Kidney pain is referred to the back and flank, the Somatic NS.

Interesting.

I’ve had several over my 74 years above ground. No fun at all. No way to get comfortable. One, I missed my youngest son’s graduation supper; another stressed my heart and I wound up in ICU the first week of school. I was, at that time, elementary principal of a school with 750 students. Staff was greatly glad to see me the second week.

I feel for you brother! That first stone passing is the most pain a man can experience short of someone drilling a hole in your kneecap lol.

LEMONS 🍋 Lemons LEMONS!!! After I had my first one and went through the God awful pain I told wife no way I could live through that again so I got appointment with urologist and he said lemon juice is your best friend! It helps dissolve the little bastards! Stay away from milk, soda, and hard water. Put lemon in every glass of water you drink!

The Holy Grail?

Not sure you could get drunk enough to mask a real kidney stone attack. You’d just puke that much more

You’re talking prevention, I gather.

Back earlier in the year I had a stone hung in the duct between my kidney and bladder, it was the most pain I’ve ever had. The only thing that helped me with the pain was 800mg Ibuprofen until I passed it

I'm not a Dr but work with Urologists daily. From what I have gathered over the years Stones under 5-6mm may pass on their own. There are some tight spots in the ureter that they can still commonly get hung up at. Avoid dark sodas, teas, and cranberry juice(good for UTI's but have oxalates that can form stones). Drink lots of water, also citric acid from at least one lemon a day has been shown in studies to help prevent and/or dissolve some forms of stones.

Three times!!! 😖
I've had broken bones and joint replacement surgery

One surgery, they put 2 pins in my right ankle to stabilize that joint.
Per the X-rays, the pins are about 2.5 inches long and about 5/16" diameter!
I literally ATE hydrocodone for about two weeks.
It STILL wasn't as painful at those kidney stones!

To me, kidney stones feel like someone put me in a huge vise with 5 foot jaws. I'm being squeezed just below belly button level!!!!

Last episode lasted about 2 days.
After it cleared up, I was at the feed store.
They asked me where I'd been, so I told them kidney stone!
A woman standing at the checkout stated that she had experienced both child birth AND kidney stones!!
"I'll take childbirth again ANY day!"
