I have a Swarovski z5 brh reticle which is great for me on most rifles as I do not dial. However on my rebuilt model 70 in 300 wm was considering going with a 30 mm and a more capable scope for dialing and Longer range work. Any suggestions on something comparable and not too heavy or large want to keep it well balanced hunting rifle still.

I agree with others here, the Leupold VX6 3-18×44 is a nice scope. I have one on a Sako 85. But for dialing I also like my Trijicon. Might be worth a look.

I'd consider a Trijicon or SWFA HD if I were in your position.

Yup. March also seems like a good option. Or accept a few more ounces and go LRHS2, ATACR 4-16x, etc.

What’s y’all opinion on the individual bases vs the full picattiny rail.

Leica Amplus 6 2.5-15x50 or 56 is a great scope for the money.

I have Leupold Backcountry rings on a .270 Weatherby Mag and like them. I also have Talley on Tikka 30-06, .300 wsm & 7mm RM and like them.

On a hunting rifle, I like to keep things light and tidy. On a tactical rifle, I like to run a rail. It's all personal preference. I am wondering how far you plan on shooting, when you say "longer range"?? Sounds like maybe the Swaro is just not cutting it, even though it has a longrange reticle with hash marks.

I recently saw a Swaro Z5 5-25x52 with the BRH reticle. It's a 1" tube from the looks of it. When I looked at it, I'm thinking for a newer scope, it seems highly outdated. This scope is in like new condition with box for $800.00. I thought about buying it, just to resell it, but decided against it. Not something I'd use, as I'd actually prefer my Burris AR762 4.5-14x42 because I can actually dial that one and it's about 1/3 the price, or 1/5 the price of a new Z5!!. I know, scoff at that one. But I was ringing steel at 700 yards with it on an AR10 the other day with ease. I run that scope on a couple 300 magnums as well.

In most instances you don't have to pay Z5 prices to get the job done. That Burris scope is an example of this. If you did not put a weight stipulation on what you are looking for, I'd suggest Nightforce hands down. Something in the SHV lineup. But since you are looking for a lightweight scope, that's all I have.

My opinion on rails are that they solve a couple of potential issues…. by being able to space the rings as far apart as possible and position the scope wherever it best suits the shooter you don’t need to worry about spacing. With that flexibility you can get the best eyebox and eye relief while having room to adjust for the “bolt lift” so it doesn’t hit the scope….it’s also a very strong setup. On my hunting rifles I’ve swapped several over to pic rails which also makes moving scopes around a simple affair in a pinch.

There is associated weight involved and they aren’t as sleek and pretty as some others but on my hunting rifles since I’m not entering them into any beauty contests now wear pic rails…mostly Murphy Precision and mostly bedded rails to the receiver for perfect fit.

I sold all my VX6 2-12 LRD scopes and replaced them with Vortex Razor 3-15 LHTs. Love them. Love that the reticle leaves the whole top half of view clear and has just a little illuminated red dot for the dark timber. Perfect power range for my uses. I have 5 of them and they all dial perfectly. They give the best combination of optics, illumination, repeatability, reticle, and value in my opinion.

I have an S&B 3x12×50 on my 300wm and could not be happier.

There are a lot of good choices to choose from.

I’m happy with my Zeiss v4 scopes & have had them dial accurately out to 1100 yards. I have the 4-16x50 on my old 7mm RM & it’s about as clear & sharp as anything I’ve looked through in a hunting scope. It’s an ounce heavier than the Razor or VX6- all good scopes.

Did our long range sight in for elk season yesterday the new $2200 VX6 really made a difference for the youngest hunter in our group. He was hitting targets at 700 yards with his new 300 & 6.5/300 weatherby rifles. Big upgrade over his 30-06 &3-9 Leupold. Shot rifles with Zeiss, Leupold, Vortex all were capable. It’s fun to ring steel at 500+ yards with multiple rifles including friends new stuff. Modern quality optics make that fairly routine even in a 10 mph gusty wind.

Had an older 3-9 Zeiss conquest on our least accurate shooter’s rifle lose it’s zero- that was a first. He’s inconsistent but when it wandered 6+ inches for me at 100 yards twice it was clearly not accurate any longer. He took several shots to kill an elk last year & was worried about it with cause.
