So, my son is heading to NM for an elk hunt and wants to buy some really good binoculars. 10X glass that will last a lifetime. He's willing to spend the money to get the best. I am of the opinion to stay away from the combo units with rangefinder and other features. Could I be wrong?

Looking for opinions and experiences. Thanks.

Yes, you are wrong.
Rangefinder binos are among the best purchases I've made.

Buy 2 sets? 1 for glassing 15x56 and a smaller pair 8x42 or 10x42 for hunting.

This is a magnification inquiry - what will he mainly be using the binocular for post-elk hunt?

The Athlon 2-12 is so good you don’t need binoculars.

I have had good luck with Leica and still hunt with them. The problem with binocs with built in range finders is the apparent short life span of the range finder. Mine lasted perhaps 2-3 years and then no longer worked properly. Probably cheaper to have regular binocs and a separate range finder that you will throw away as it will quit working in a couple years.

And at a pretty good discount currently at many locations. Also agree that the new NL's are as good as it gets - should be at $3K+.

Has anyone mentioned Swaro NL Pure’s?

Most of all he loved the fall
The leaves yellow on the cottonwoods
Leaves floating on the trout steams and above the hills
The high blue windless skies
Now he will be part of them, forever
