Inside the house distances, that would be plenty effective.

#3 or 4 buck, #4/5/6 shot.

Otherwise, like many have said, grab some shells with bigger shot. EXCEPT! I'd avoid pattern control Goose or Turkey type loads. Those things are made to hold tight out to 40 or 50 yards. Extremely thick & stiff wads, would be about like shooting a slug @ home, or even most yard distances. Common slugs much cheaper if that's what ya need.
One thing about the shot loads in stiff wad vs slugs is once a wall is penetrated the shot won't ricochet, the slug will bounce through the country like a bowling ball.

Military surplus 00 in my Benelli Mark II. It's high velocity and is designed to thrown a wide pattern. I've got the improved cylinder screw in choke in the gun to make it hold a bit tighter than the cylinder bore shotguns that it was made to be shot through.

#3 or #4 Buck. I think I have a few boxes of #1 buck.

No need for 00 at hallway ranges.

+1. #4 buck is all one needs for HD.

I have done numerous experiments on the subject. Ie took sheetrock to range. With kids I had #4 low brass lead, good pattern from my bed to door, and didn't over penetrate to their room. Now kids are gone 458 socom, 3" 04 buck and numerous other calibers laying around😉

I know that 12 Gauge #4 buck works well, 24 pellets do a number on human flesh at close range. If you shoot someone in your house, you should keep shooting them as long as you feel that they pose a deadly threat to you and/or your family.

I can afford an AR.

But I know they're not for everybody.

The Federal Flight control 8 pellet stuff is the best on the market. extremely low recoil, very tight patterns My 870P with rifle sights keeps all of the pellets in a paper plate out to 25 yards or so.

you do not want to shoot heavy shot to blow thru walls, skeet choke, 3' #5-6 shot peal the paint off the walls and put a few hundred pellets in the intruder

At “inside the house” ranges I don’t think it matters. Regardless of the shot size the shot column is going to be one big wad of lead.

Heck, my shack is 15 yards long so I could make a hell of a mess with #9 skeet loads. A cyl. choke is about the only one that interest me in a situation like this. But other folks will have different needs.

I'm a #1 buck aficionado!
Sixteen .32 caliber bullets headed down range.
In my 3 shot Rem Sportsman, that's 48 bullets.
I only use 2 3/4" ammo.

Hornady Varmint Express #4 Buck. Its what I use in a shotgun for predators and Im sure it will do fine on 2 leggeds as well. My 410 Shockwave thats in the bedroom has the Hornady defense loads with the slug and 2 35 cal pellets. At the less than 5 yard hallway distance they group under 2 inches and penetrate well. In my shop I have a mossberg 500 12 with 18.5 barrel, FO sights, extended mag tube and Ar style stock. This is loaded with a chambered round of Federal LE Low recoil 00 then 2 brenneke home defense slugs then remainder the buckshot. Have an Esstac 6 round card mounted with the slugs.

Pop off a few rounds from a short Bbl'ed AR in a hallway?

You better be able to afford cochlear implants as well.
