This Year's Big Buck This buck was taken by my brother-in-law. He measured 178 B&C. I blew an opportunity to shoot him earlier in the day, because I was too busy focussing on three does. I had already passed on close to two dozen does and 8-point bucks, looking for the big boy on opening day. For some unknown reason, I got a severe case of brain damage and raised my rifle to get a better look at the last doe, rather than waiting patiently for the big buck to follow. A typical rookie hunting mistake, but this is after 44 years of hunting experience. No excuses. When I finally saw the buck, he was off to my right. He saw me first, while I was preoccupied with the does, wheeled around and was gone before I could swing the rifle to bear. I was sick about it, but I'm glad my brother-in-law got him. Oh, well. It's like my dad said, "Don't worry about it. You can't shoot 'em all."

I edited the post since I've figured out how to add pics. The pics are wider than what initially shows, so you have to scroll across at the bottom to see the whole set of antlers.

Nice buck, but are you sure he's a 178? Doesn't quite look like he measures up. Kinda hard to tell from the pics though.
Why pack all that messy meat out of the bush when we can just go to the grocery store where meat is made? Hell,if they sold antlers I would save so much money I could afford to go Dolphin fishing. Maybe even a baby seal safari.

Sam, thanks for adding that third one. Check out the neck on that guy. Yep, that's a big bastage. 120 or 180, who cares? That's a trophy in anyone's eyes.

highridge1, My brother-in-law had never taken a trophy buck before, and field dressed him without thinking about what he was doing to the front of the cape. His taxidermist told him that he could fix it. Even if he can't, he's got other nice capes that will work.

Score isn't everything but if I didn't know the score I'd say he's at least mid-160's and likely more. Strong G3's and 4's and long beams, likely over 25+. Average mass, good width and again nice length all the way around. Great deer and great trophy in anyone's book! Congrats!

Sam- If his taxidermist can fix THAT, then he's a freaking miracle worker or he'll get a straight-on mount with about 6" of neck.
