A real hunter would sooner have a sling and no rifle than have a rifle and no sling.

Have no rifles but all my shotguns have slings. I have a leather slip on one for the guns that don't.

I'm with 5sdad. Can't imagine arguing against slings.

5 or 6 years ago, I made a sort of Boonie Packer Safari sling to see if I'd like it. I did so I bought a real one. Best sling I've ever used. $30 well spent.

I would like to say that I “never” use a sling when hunting……unless both hands are needed for a quick task!

However, after missing 4 years of hunting, and being 4 years older, I found that my rifle started getting pretty heavy. It appears that it put on a lot of weight while not being hunted/used! 🙀 😉 😂 🤬 memtb

A simple, easily adjustable sling like that is all I want or need on a hunting rifle.

Those are as slick as can be and never stay on my shoulder. Worse than leather.

I use a quick mitt cheater sling along with a rubber shoulder sling. Works great for me. Cheater sling helps you hold steady.http://quickmitt.com/

I still have the original strap that was on my M16-A1 when I got to Ft Lewis WA in 1986.
Me and that strap have logged quite a few miles together.
We came back from NTC the end of March in 1989, and I took it home to run through the washer to get Ft Irwin’s dirt out of it prior to my ETS.
When I returned it, the Armorer already had a new one on the rifle. So I took it home.
It was on my shotgun for hunting bunnies, because sometimes the beagles require a free hand or two to get them into the truck at the end of the day.
It now has a permanent home on my Ruger AR/5.56.
While I was in the Army I had a 20 round magazine that I carried in the field.
It kept the dirt outta the action without digging in to your back in the chow line as the 30 round did.
I wish I’d kept it, but I gave it to my buddy Rawles who had 2 years left.
I really can’t say why, probably the miles, but that simple canvas strap is one of my prized possessions!grin

I prefer the Bronwell latigo sling and the three point competition type slings. For whatever reason,, 4 of my rifles will not shoot consistent POI with bipods. I tthink it is due to tuning fork effect and differnces in ground hardness - mud, drier earth, grass and other plants plus stones. I use my slings as shooting aids;

I have found the same..If your barrel is free floated then no tuning fork effect could exist, but for consistent accuracy the rifle needs needs to be able to slide straight back each time on recoil and not to the right or left. Basic bench form I guess. I use bipod for load development with the feet on a 12x12in piece of ply wood that has formica glued to it.

I haven’t read the whole thread, but I usually carry my slung rifles Euro style. But I can always see exactly where the muzzle is. And in a safe direction.
