Looking for pricing information. I have a pre-mil 99F, .308, 1956 production with a bad barrel (lots of pitting). Would shoot fine after 6 or 8 fouling shots, but every time it was cleaned (which wasn't easy!) would have to start all over again to get sighted in. Stopped hunting with it about 20 yrs ago. Picked up a take-off barrel from another member here years ago, but never swapped it out and lost interest. Have a good bolt action .308 and other 99Fs in 30/30 (Version 1) and 300 Sav (Ver 2).

So...time to move the .308 on. What would be a fair price for the reciever/action with all internal parts and the butt stock through bolt? The tang filler screws are missing. Barrel and stocks not included. Blueing has wear on bottom of reciever and starting to wear up the sides. I'd consider it in very good condition if not for the barrel pitting.

Mike, the folks are not answering the question you asked, but I am going to guess a 99 action to be in the $500 plus range. The wood may go for $250. Let’s see what the others say. Hope this helps! Alan

Mike, respectfully, what you have is the donor for a great rebore to 358. When you say you already have a 350 mag if you want to shoot a 35, do you have a 350 mag in a lightweight, fast shooting lever action? The 99F in 358 has got to be one of the greatest cartridge/rifle combinations of all time. If that was mine I'd rebarrel or rebore to 358, refinish to something you love, and hunt the living hell out of it.

I think that, based on some I've seen through a couple of auctions, you would be at about $450 for the action and $200 for the wood. That is based on seeing some fully functional 308s in the $700+ range lately. This is not GB based prices. You might get more here or on GB.

I'm actually thinking about a 308 based 99 rebarrel to another caliber myself. Just haven't pulled the trigger due to two Mauser projects.

Why not just sell the rifle “as is”? Do you have some other use for the stocks?

I have re-barreled a number of 99s and they are not difficult.

So I'd ask 'why not install a new barrel'?

If you don’t want it just sell the whole gun, might make a couple dollars more parting it out, but when one considers the time and effort involved it’s usually not worth it

Have someone interested in just the reciever/action. Also have two other 99Fs in the safe plus some more among relatives - stock may go to another rifle if any are in poorer condition. Have already canabalized small stuff like grip cap and some filler screws for other rifles over the years while it sat idle.

Was thinking that way for awhile, even as far as buying a take-off 99F .308 barrel. When I shelved it I bought a Kimber Montana in .308 to replace, and I really like it. Also traded into a pristine 99F in 300 Sav, which I think is a better combination anyway. End result - lost interest in the .308, rather use the 300. Not a collector, just an appreciator and user.

If you decide to sell the wood I'm interested.
