I picked up a new to me Savage 1899 Featherweight 30/30 today at my local gun shop. It's my first Utica gun and it's in really good shape with a nice bore and 20" barrel. It has a perch belly stock and schnabel forend. No cracks, no holes for sling swivels and no extra holes in the metal. It also has the Savage micrometer rear sight which I thought was unusual for a carbine. Anyway here's the usual question, when was it made s/n 161XXX lever boss code is an H in a circle. My book list the serial number as 1914. Thank you Gentlemen.

Leave the gun, take the canolis.

Rory's book says 1914. There was no Lever Boss Code until 1949. 1949=A, 50=B, 51=C, etc. If the Lever Boss has stampings, they are just inspectors stamps.

I'm not greedy, I just want one of each.

From what I can see in the photos you have a very nice original 1899-H with a lot of condition. Take good care of it. Would like to see more photos if possible.

...and in a caliber that is actually available at a realistic price.

By serial number it should date to fall of 1914, tho any specific gun might have been finished late.

The Featherweights had a hard rubber buttplate standard, and the micrometer rear sight was standard for all 1899's at that time. Nice snag!

That looks like a twin to mine except for the different rear sight. Thanks for all the answers.
