Why do people make cleaning a BCG so difficult?
This morning a shooting buddy brought over his DD M4A1 with about 800ish rounds through it from the last cleaning. Pretty decent carbon buildup. But I noticed a lot of scratches on the tail end of the bolt. Asked what were these - scraper of course.
Dumped it into a bottle of Slip 2000 Carbon Killer, had a coffee and caught up. 45 minutes later pulled the BCG out and wiped most of the carbon off and brushed the remaining. Simple simple.
We then discussed his bore cleaning routine. That's a whole nuther can of worms.
There are so many fantastic copper and fouling cleaners on the market that cleaning doesn't have to be difficult. Just let the chemicals do their thing and don't rush the process; you'll only wind up scrubbing more and doing more damage in the long run.

Scraping carbon of the tail end of a bolt is a good way to ruin it.
You didn't use logic or reason to get into this opinion, I cannot use logic or reason to get you out of it.

Recently started using the CAT4 tool, and it's dimensioned such as to not damage anything. The other end does a nice job inside the carrier with a patch between tool and carrier.
Necessary, no. Used old .30 cal bronze brushes for decades. Old and lazy, suppose.
The comment about chemicals needing delta T to work is spot-on. Worse than AR people are shotgun people. They scrub bores as a form of exercise when just about any solvent left to work a couple hrs turns powder/wad plastic into mush.

Was your friend ever in the Air Force? I ask as I was, and the first base I went to that had scrapers, let’s just say they “loved” them. I have one I got in a TacPac subscription I tried out. I used it once, and never saw the need to use it again.

No, he's just a weekend shooter without tons of gun wisdom and doesn't seem too interested in learning much more than load, shoot, stick back in safe. Not everyone is plagued with the gun addiction. I feel sorry for them.
