My go-to deer rifle is a pre-64 (1952) Model 70 in 300 H&H. Lots of gun for deer, yes, but it has sentimental value to me. I currently have it topped with an older Leupold Vari-X III 3.5-10X40 AO with duplex reticle. The package works beautifully as-is (shoots sub-MOA with RL22 and 180 gr. old-school SilverTips). However, I turned 70 in August and so did my eyes. I am having more and more trouble seeing deer and reticles early and late in the day. Wondering what you folks think might be the best answer -- lighted reticle, larger objective, better glass overall?? I mounted a 30mm on the 70 last year to see how that worked, but it didn't for me. Hunting with a classic, I'd like to keep it looking like a classic. The big tube and extra knobs and such just don't look right. I "modernized" about as much as I am going to when I replaced the old Redfield base and twist rings with a picatinny rail and Burris signature zee rings. Any and all suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

If $550 is in your budget, this one will take you to 30 minutes after sunset on a cloudy day and the lighting control is exceptional. Appearance is obviously subjective.

I picked up one of these from Cameraland a while back that may meet your needs.

I am continually astounded at how quickly people make up their minds on little evidence or none at all.

My first stop would be an Eye Doctor not a glasses fitter at Walmart. Mild cataracts, cataract replacement lenses clouding etc with give you the symptoms you mentioning. 77 here with both eyes having had cataract surgery 25-30 years ago. Medicare or your supplemental plan will cover eye problems other than glasses.

I can.still kill coyotes with 50+ year old Balvar 8 and a deer with a Weaver K-1.5 on my drilling..

Most are, just like the VX-Freedom line, but in the Firedot models, they all have 30mm tubes.

The 3-9 Bushnell Prime has an illuminated center dot for right at $200 in most places. I found one at Walmart for $140.

I recently bought two 3-9X Accupoint's, one for a 375 H&H brown bear hunt next year and the other for? They were $600 shipped from Midway a bit ago. Optically nothing is lacking. Both have the green post reticle that the local rep I met in north Idaho (Black Sheep in CDA) suggested was the owners reticle with a fair bit of world wide hunting under his belt? It is now mounted on my 375 but I need to load rounds and shoot with it.

Ed, does that triangle show up as black when you have the light door shut? A video I saw seemed to show it as pretty vague against a bright background like the sky. I have two with the green duplex and find no fault with them, despite the huge “handicap” of being SFP, or so I’m told😛

I'm not Ed, but the triangle is lit by tritium, so it is lit all the time. That's how my green dot works.

When I shoot under cover at the range, the tritium isn’t bright enough to show up much, if at all with the target in bright light. Both scopes are pretty new, and the tritium works fine in the dark.

This one would be a good choice.

I have a Trijicon Credo 1-6 illuminated (red) It's a great scope. I think the 3-9 would be perfect for a M-70. It will probably be my next scope.

Thanks for all the sound advice. I just ordered the Trijicon Accupoint 3-9X40 with crosshairs/green dot.
