The guy was a helluva basketball coach, but I think he was unhinged.

Saw a video of him speaking during an interview. Had eyes like an animal...looked as though he had no soul. Very weird.

I have seen him in the Big Horn Mountains before. I think he had a cabin on Billy Creek road.

My father was a VP at Blocks department store in Indy. He had quite a few occasions to spend time with Bobby and thought very highly of him.

I only met him briefly when visiting my folks in Indy and he was very cordial to me and my wife.

He was wired tightly but I think he was coming from the right place.

I played high school basketball in the early seventies under a coach that was a retired marine pilot. He was one squared away man. Most every one hated him due to his hard work ethic and discipline. I loved playing for him. He rewarded hard work and he taught me a lot that I have carried through my life. Bobby Knight reminds me of that. I would have gotten along with him as a coach just fine. Hard work rewarded....

RIP Bobby....

RIP, last of the old school coaches. He was a competitor and that is how most people saw him. Also a genuine human being who cared for his players even after they left IU. A hunter and fisherman as well. He earned my respect.

I always liked coach Knight especially his TV fishing shows. My high school basketball coach threw a chair at a ref in 1972. He was a Marine Corp. officer in MACS V but he wasn’t a pilot! He was a hell of a guy also!

Coach Knight was to southern Indiana what Bear Bryant was to Alabama.
There was a boy at my elementary school who played basketball and he had terminal cancer. This was probably 1982. Like everybody else, he was a big I.U. fan.
Someone got word to Coach Knight and when the school had their basketball banquet he showed up as a surprise and sat with the boy and gave him an award. It was big news in our county.
The kid died a few months later and Coach Knight came to the funeral. He was good to their family for years.
On a lighter note, I have worked with Bailey’s brother-in-law for years. He told us a story about the coach that Damon told him.(One of many)
About his junior year, Damon and a couple of his teammates was slacking on the morning run. They would run a couple miles, catch the bus, then hang out in the dorms until class.
Everybody used to keep an eye on the players all over town and if they would start to get a little out of line somebody would get a phone call.
Damon said they got on the bus one morning and nobody really noticed the big guy in the back reading the newspaper. The bus started rolling and a familiar voice from the back of the bus asked, “Did you boys have a good run?” Damon said they knew they were dead, lol.
On the other hand, it could be tough to find a place to bird hunt. About half of everybody you asked said the same thing. Oh, we would let you hunt but Bobby hunt’s here. That was pretty common, at least in northern Lawrence county and Greene county.
RIP Coach!

My high school basketball (and football) coach invited him to go pheasant hunting (not in spirit of the campfire pheasant hunting)…they were old basketball coaching buddies. He came in to the weight room one morning showing us the response on Indiana University letterhead from Coach Knight. “You know I’m too busy in the fall to come to Kansas for a pheasant hunt, but you better have a spot in the spring for turkeys”

Not sure if they ever hunted together or not, but I thought it was pretty cool at the time.
