I am thinking about using prewar Win 70 stock for inletting M98 action. Don’t have actual stock in front of me, so I can’t get idea how the M98 action would fit. It is rough cut with starter channel for the barrel. I know M98 has longer distance between action screws. As long as if the M98 bottom metal footprint is larger than W70, than I could make larger diameter hole on front and get away with escutcheon for front screw.

I think the front tang and back tang of the mauser are both longer, so the box is further back on the mauser.

The prewar stock for a M-70 is cut for the flier de lis (aka Clover leaf) upper action tang, plus a third screw in the middle. A non molested pre war stock is worth $200 plus, plus. You can buy a fence post grade already cut M-98 stock for $90 plus shipping from Richards all day long. You just finish it. Suggest you look at the sale or the seconds sections. If you hack up the 70 stock, you may be lucky to get a seconds quality stock as a result.

It looks to me that the Mauser is narrower thru the floor plate than the m70

I've always got at least one of each in process with bottom metal casting/bedding templates etc. What exactly do you need - dimensions of each in the mag box area?
