Guessing from the pictures the barrel was turned to reduce diameter and weight, then restamped with just the caliber,

When a barrel is turned down it is done on a lathe Turned down in diameter, usually to reduce weight. Barrels come in all sorts of diameter and are turned to a specified diameter at the rifle makers order.

Yes sir, I do understand turning down, I was just a bit surprised that was the approach given the fairly light contour of the Featherweight compact as the come originally. Thanks for the response.

DBrink,I took a full pound off the rifles weight. Even with the light contour of the featherweights barrel there is much more steel than is necessary to insure accuracy and mostly left there to placate the extremely recoil sensitive rifle shooters. This rifle shoots less than 1 inch MOA which proves that more weight and steel is not necessary in a hunting rifle that will be fired at most twice in a given day but carried ALL day long it the rocky mountain west

In my experience, I'd rather leave weight in the barrel and reduce it with a lighter stock. I like the balance better that way. YMMV

Any idea on diameter of contour at 16/17/18”?

I just don’t buy many (if any) additional rifles, if I can’t thread and cut (if needed). Might help someone else on the fence, as well?

This rifle would be in MI at this price if I hadn't found a nice 336 in 35 Rem. Bump to the top.

LJ,
Per our conversation I’ll take this little gem off your hands.

I’ll take it.
