A neighbor mentioned he had a few Winchester rifles he wanted to sell so I went over to look at them. They were a pair of 94 30-30s in the 1966 century of leadership models, one 20" and one 26". I bought the Winchester and then asked if he had any other guns he wanted to sell. He said I've got an old rusted savage of my dad's I want to get rid of.
He bought out a savage 99 take down in 250-3000. It was badly pitted and rusted especially on one side. It looked like it had layed on one side on carpet for years under a bed maybe. It seems in working order and I've always wanted a take down 99 and especially in that caliber so I went ahead and bought it. Is it worth polishing and reblueing or is it better to leave it as is?
It's on its second round of wipe out right now but after the first round the rifling was definitely more pronounced and looks shootable but is obviously pitted too. I took a ton of fouling out with the first round of cleaning. Is even a rough take down worth $200?

I know how I'd deal with a rusted 99, but you don't want to know! LOL

The takedown hardware alone on the stock is worth most of that $200, I'd guess. I'd clean it up, take it out and shoot it. It might still shoot okay.

It can always be sanded polished and refinished. Beside at $200 a little rust won't make you feel like a criminal when you take it bout and put scratches and dings in it.

It's worth way more than $200 parted out.

Most anyone here would give you a 50-100% profit on that rifle sight unseen! Clean it up and shoot it! Enjoy.....

Just finished another round of wipe out. Dry patched it and then lapped it a bit rith rem clean mineral abrasive. I only use it on the worst old bores. Then I dry patched it all out. Then did a round of boretech eliminator then dry patched it clean. Then one more round of wipeout accelerator and Wipeout foam until tomorrow. Should be ready to shoot when the dies and bullets show up. I may have to form brass for now.
The bore is definitely rough and pitted but you can see the lands and grooves now and there's no bulges and lapping felt pretty consistent. If it shoots 2-3 moa with open sights I'll be happy and hunt with it.
