I should take a picture. Rope clutch, and spring breakaway.
Anyone else plow with one?

Dad had one that we planted potatoes with. 3 bottom, 16", rope trip lift, high speed bottoms. In the 1950s he used it with a pony drill to seed wheat, when he quit plowing it got demoted to potatoes and plowing the garden each spring. I still have it but it hasn't been used in 45 years. He used a gas M, and later a gas Super W6 to pull it.

Did a little reading, so slat plows are for wet, sticky ground?

In the old machinery row I've also got an old 3 bottom, hand lift plow with breaker bottoms. Think it's a P & O

I think so. A school friend had a night job cutting, and welding new edges on the plow shares.

New one for me too, had to look a slat plow up. Here in eastern MT, lots of moldboards in the day and the occasional disk plow, and breaker bottoms were used to break sod. Plowing went out of favor in the 1950s as chisel plows with sweeps and stubble mulch farming became the thing to do. My experience is all dryland. But had never seen a slat plow!

Yes, I believe it's archaic, but still correct.

I've never farmed with a moldboard, but there's something satisfying about watching one at work. Thought about getting Dad's old plow working again, but no real use in todays world. I'll bet that back tire is expensive!

Do you grease the moldboard and lathe in the off season? Dad did, and it helped with scouring in the spring. He said a neighbor with a gravel hill just dropped the rusty plow in the gravel and plowed till they shined up.

I didn't know that. Bet it protected way better than grease.

I remember seeing a couple when I was a kid - never knew what the reason for them was. The world championship plowing contest was held down by the Amanas one year. We went and watched for a day - lots of exhibits and associated things. Being the physics lost soul that i am, I never did understand how a plow (plough) hitched to a drawbar bit into the ground instead of just riding up over it.

The point on the front of the lathe pulls it down, I believe.

Yes, but like much of physics, I can't really get my mind to accept it. (See last signature line.)
