Just wondering what a .980- 12 tap would be in metric designation. Thanks

I pulled the barrel off of my 1916 Spanish Mauser. And was wondering what tap size it is. I've got metric taps but, everything I find online is .980-12.

Why do I have to press 1, for English?

There is no metric equivalent. Mauser barrel threads were British Whitworth threaded so all dimensions were in inches.(I don’t remember why)Whitworth threads are 55 degrees rather than US standard 60 degrees but most barrels are threaded with 60 degree threads with no problems. If you find a .980-12 tap, it is the proper dimensions.

Thanks, I kind of figured there wasn't a metric equivalent. I just asked because I have several metric and standard taps. But, not a .980-12.

There are quite a few .980-12 Mauser tenon taps available. Be aware that some cut a full depth thread.

I wouldn't be running any tap in the receiver, machine the threads to fit the receiver.

Victor Machinery Co. can make non-standard taps. I had one made to chase some galled cylinder head bolt threads in an engine that had an oddball thread head bolt. www.victornet.com
