Just started thinking about a 300 bo for deer and hogs, 16 inch barrel with supersonic loads, probably Barnes 110s or similar. 1–7 or 1–8? Please advise and thanks!

My 16" Ruger American Ranch Rifle is 1-8" twist. It shoot subs and supersonics accurately.
Edited to add: My 10.5" SBR is also twisted 1-8. It accurately shoots subs and supers, as well.

It's 2023, my friend. More twist is ALWAYS better. You need something like 1:3 twist, and use a bullet that's about 2 inches long and make sure you dangle it a mile off the end of the case neck. That way when it feeds up the ramp of your AR, the bullet has a lot of leverage to get bent sideways before it chambers.......doesn't matter though, it will center itself up. Extra cool points for that. And who cares how fast it's going. When it finally gets there, it will have tons of energy.

Run it up, until you blow it up, then back it down a bit.

My 16" Ruger American Ranch Rifle is 1-8" twist. It shoot subs and supersonics accurately. I responded from memory, and it looks like I screwed up. Ruger lists the twist rate at 1-7” for the Ruger American Ranch rifle. Sorry about that! Edited to add: My 10.5" SBR is also twisted 1-8. It accurately shoots subs and supers, as well. PSA does list a 1-8” twist rate for the upper I have from them.

My Wilson 300 hamr is only a 15 twist. It was all they had available in their lightest contour when I ordered it but I wasn't planning on using heavy high bc bullets in it at subsonic speeds. I was planning 110g-150g pushed as fast as that little case could run them.
I'd have preferred at least their 13 twist because I always like a little more twist than I'm planning on needing but for what I wanted to do with this gun I knew 15 would get me by but would have definitely went faster if it was available.
I have 7 twist blackouts for the heavy stuff or if I really want some light monos spinning and they also shoot the lighter bullets well. So I don't see a downside to the faster twist but I won't even bother to try anything longer than a 150 speer in the 1:15.
It would be interesting to ask Bill Wilson why he went 1:15" on the HAM'R but we've given him enough grief about twists lately. Maybe he was just trying to max speed with lower rpms or figured if they worked for benchrest shooters and lighter bullets they'd work his round.
My 16" 1:7 blackouts shoot 110g vmaxes at 2450fps or so with very good accuracy.
Either a 1:7 or 1:8 is way more twist than you'll ever need to shoot 110g bullets supersonic. If you start looking at 225g to 245g subsonic loads consider a 7 over an 8.

That's pretty much it, plus some thought that slower twists yield marginally less pressure, which I disagree with.

My 16" AR is 1-8, shoots 125 Sierra Pro Hunters and Speer HP's fine.
