Core out a head of cabbage. Boil enough water to cover the head, and as each leaf loosens… peel it off and set aside
6lbs ground beef/pork or whatever you’d like 3 cups cooked rice Can of tomato sauce Can of chopped tomatoes 1 chopped onion Chopped Garlic Salt Pepper Granulated garlic Onion powder 4 eggs Oregano Parsley 2 Shredded carrots
Mix it all up in a large bowl.
Stuff filling in a cabbage leaf and roll it up, tucking in the sides like a burrito.
Stack them in a pot. Thin 1 can of tomatoe paste with the cabbage water and our over the rolls.
ladle in cabbage broth til almost full.
Cover and bake at 325 for about two hours

Robertham, Find a local German market and ask for a "sour head" - whole sauerkraut head, not shredded. Make your rolls with that, and put the tomato sauce in your filling. Then cover them with shredded sauerkraut and bake. That's how my grandmother used to make them. Thank me later.

My grandfather and grandmother were from Albany, Louisiana. At one time, Albany was the largest Hungarian settlement in the nation. The Hungarian people came to cut timber and stayed to farm the leftover land. Grandpaw was a strawberry farmer.
All that being said, the Hungarian people knew how to grow and cook cabbage! Stuffed cabbage in particular. Crazy to say, but when dad wants to go back to his hometown for a funeral of an old buddy, I usually try and take him because the church ladies cook for everyone after the graveside services. Stuffed cabbage is always the main highlight! Along with polechenta, cabbage noodles, lefva, keeflees and all the good stuff.
Yours look great sir!

My mom made cabbage rolls that were delicious. I remember her spending most of the day making them and keeping them basted while cooking. I’m to lazy to spend that amount of time for just myself. Fond memories of her cooking them from seeing those pictures.

These are the rolls and the finished product. Yummy. The sauerkraut is so sweet and salty.

Miss her & the stuffed cabbage rolls she made ! Same for me. I was raised in SW PA and stuffed cabbage was a staple, especially on holidays. A couple of them, some pierogi's, and a big hunk of polish kielbasa is a superb meal. Another local favorite is fried cabbage and noodles.

Looks mighty fine! My mom made them frequently and my wife does the same. Love those things!
