Reserved my new camping spot in the Tioga SF. Looking forward to trying a new spot. Did some bow scouting a couple weeks ago and the acorns were thick!

Opening day, (and most of the season) I’ll be sitting in my daughter’s blind with her, scanning the ridge or out doing small pushes trying to help her get her tags filled. Since I got my buck in archery, I’m puppy for her and her and my brother.
Of course this will be after trudging all over state forest land hunting in New York starting Saturday.
Happy, safe hunting and good luck! 😎

I'll be out. Starting a new job Monday though, so I'll only be hunting the weekends this year.
Next year I'll be back to my regularly scheduled time off.

Hopefully rifle season will be better than archery season. Going directly for my last sit in bow season. It seems like the deer have disappeared. Too much standing corn. I hope it gets cut before rifle comes in.

Cameras have certainly quieted down last 4-5 days. I wonder if its not just peak breeding and the deer are all pinned down? However there is a lot of standing corn in our area as well..

I usually hold out for a buck before I shoot a doe, so some years season ends empty handed. But this year think I'm going to get on the board early if a doe or 2 shows first, then buck hunt rest of the season.

Hunting public land here, I’ve learned to follow the old “if it’s brown, it’s down” rule, as after the first few days of rifle season they all get pretty scarce. Here they only have to wade across the Shenandoah to escape the pumpkin army. The xbow has put me on the board most years since 2018, so the meat pressure is usually off by the time the guns come out. This year I’m under the Earn-a-Buck restriction on opening day, again, so am hoping to shed that quickly. If I get a doe, that’ll be plenty of meat for the year and I can loaf around the woods hoping for a nice buck the rest of the season…
Good luck fellers!

I’m running quite a few cams and noticed a similar pattern. I spent 2022 hunting a couple good bucks with 1 particular I was targeting and a few other I just couldn’t pass up. I ended up eating my buck tag but did shoot a couple does. Archery season was much the same this year. Hunting specific bucks and passing quite a few immature deer. I still have a buck tag and will be out with the rifle still looking for specific deer. I will fill the freezer if the opportunity presents itself on does. Good luck out there and be safe

I’ve been off since last week. Been out for bear, but no luck. I’ll be out Saturday, but due to some health issues, I can’t hike back the 1.5-2 miles like I normally do for deer season.
Even though I haven’t been able to hunt for the last two years, on Saturday I’ll be holding out for a buck. I can also still hunt for black bear in my area.
I’m a handgun hunter, so I’ll be sitting in my spot with my deer slayer; 14” TC Contender in 7-30 Waters.

Well I was torn on which rifle to carry Saturday. Looks like the 243 gets the nod. Haven’t killed a wall hanger with it yet. Actually only ever killed 1 buck with it but stack does up pretty well. That was the deciding factor… need to kill a good buck with Paps old 243.

All I saw was a doe, fawn and PA 11 point (spike). None of which I could shoot. That and lots of people. I know it’s opening day on state forest but I was surprised how many trucks rolled up the dead end rd this morning. Oh well. Tomorrow is a new day!

i seen small 6pt and a little 8pt, but the one i wanted is a huge 8pt. i seen him 1st thing in morning and he ran. i/ve also seen about 14 or 15 doe and fawns. 10:30 am i got her using a TC Encore with a 23" MGM barrel in 444 Marlin and 280gr WFN GC over Reloder 7 going 1947fps. i shot her behind the shoulder, thru both lungs and bottom half of the heart, then i broke 2 ribs on the way out. she was 40ish yards away and she ran after the shout about 15 yards and then she died. there was alot of blood coming out of her. altho she ran about 15 yards, it was like a man with two ketchup bottles was going thru the woods and spraying ketchup on the ground and trees and brush.

Well sorry for the late reply and no photo. I’ve been trying to get a photo to upload since yesterday evening I managed to get lucky and seal the deal with a buck we’ve been after for 3 years. Between 3 of us we’ve laid eyes on him 5 times And this time was the one.. to say I am elated is an understatement.
I had my paps 243 in my hands, I’ve killed a few does and way back in the day a spike with it. I had carried this rifle with rhe intention of taking a good buck with it and finally came though. I could feel my grandpap sitting with me today. There just aren’t words to describe how special this deer and this hunt was.
we have his sheds from 2021,
About 8:15 I heard some leaves crunching. Eyes scanning hard I realized the deer was coming from behind me over my left shoulder and closing. I turned a little to look and he stopped. Then a short snort and he took off. I caught a flash of big antler and the gun was up and safety off. I managed to get the cross hairs on him and shot, racked another round and managed a follow up shot. He crossed a ditch and slowed down and I lost sight of him. I thought the first shot was a hit and the 2nd was a miss but just wasn’t sure.
I climbed down off the rock I was on and walked to where I saw him last no blood. I walked towards the ditch and see a big scuff mark in the leaves. I begin glassing to see what was past the scuff mark. lower my bino and look down and he’s laying in the ditch in front of me!!!
my biggest PA buck to date, main frame 10. 134lbs hanging weight, rough scores at 148.
my boy helped me drag him out. 1.5 miles pretty much uphill the whole way. Took just at 3 hours
Guess I will have to add the pic later…. When I get better service.
congrats to everyone and good luck to those still after it. I’m taking today off and will fill some doe tags later this week.

I had my 8 year old with me opening day Had 2 doe walk right up the logging road in front of me and stopped and stared at me. 8 year old started shaking when she saw her I had no intentions of shootinga deer at 7 am on opening day especially in those woods. but she was almost pleading saying daddy please shoot a deer. so a single 140 gr Partiton from my 280 sealed the deal

We dropped off the two I posted at the processor today. They had some massive boomers there and tons of decent bucks. It’s been an excellent year for deer hunting in our part of PA. It’s much, much better than it was 20-30 years ago. The part of PA we hunt is almost all public. It’s excellent hunting. I don’t live in PA but will travel there every year to trout fish and deer hunt.

Managed one of my shortest deer hunts yesterday evening - 3 minutes. Had my dad drop me off on the logging road to a small field we plant with clover. It's about an acre or a bit bigger and is bordered by a 10 year old clearcut on one end. We have a double stand in the corner. It's the same stand Dad shot his buck from this year. I eased up the logging road and saw deer in the field. I texted dad to hang back (he drives the 4 wheeler up the road to retrieve deer). It was 2:38 PM. I eased into the woods bordering the logging road and slowly moved closer to get a shot window. Deer starting moving out the far end of the field headed for somewhere else but not spooked, just ambling along. I looked around for a rest because the shot was going to be quick and about 75-80 yards. I dropped to kneeling and found a finger size sapling to use as a rest. It wasn't the most steady but was sufficient for what I needed to do. The biggest doe started walking across the logging road and I bleated to her with my mouth. She didn't stop waking so I whistled. She stopped and I put the crosshair tight to her shoulder and squeezed. She hit the ground so quick I lost sight of her in the recoil. The rest of the deer took off. I retrieved my brass and walked into the field where she lay. It was 2:41 PM

He had a stand in the woods on the back side, the same woods BTW where they began Pickett’s Charge in the movie. I was climbing up and spotted a buck crossing below in the brushy field. Finished climbing, unslung the .270, and cracked him. Climbed down. Done.
What fresh Hell is this?

Great buck CBB!! Congrats!!
Bwinters, I've proved to myself many times it only takes 5-15 minutes to kill a deer, but I've also proved that it sometimes takes days or even weeks, such as this yr is going so far. Ha! Only a 1 horn fork buck so far and a doe at 100 yds going 100 mph. Wasn't seeing deer around in the fields this yr and it is proving out in the woods. Don't know what's going on, but I'll keep at it.

Really? Something that small I'd just cut out and discard. It's likely just an antler wound or something similar.

Did he let you keep the antlers? It was a doe. There was a three inch long wound channel in its back. The infection was running along the spine in the back strap.

He thought the deer would have healed its self eventually.

i got a 2nd doe thursday at 4:45pm with my Husqvarna m46 in 9.3x57. it was a whopping 15ish yards when the 275gr WFN GC and IMR4895 flattened her. i still have to chronograph the 9.3, but i think it should be 1800-1900fps. anway, she was shot behind the shoulder and it went out 2 ribs behind the other shoulder. the lungs were trashed and the boolit came out about 1 1/4" hole.
i didn't take a picture because it was dark when my son field dressed it. i figure she weighed about 190 - 200 lbs. she was big, old, dry doe that i seen in my backyard at nite. my son pulled fat off her in a 5 gallon bucket. other than the backstraps, she be made in straight deerburger, no pork or hamburger.

As usual we had a great trip. Lots of deer and some really nice bucks seen.
We figured a few things out this time and finally got away from deer drives. I have to admit that I can handle hunting pressure but I cannot handle deer drive pressure. Your state and your tradition but man when I hear the hoots, hollars, barks, and marine corps chants coming through the woods, I look for a rock to hide under. Thankfully we got away from those areas early on.

I grew up doing drives. After the first day it was full blown driving. I hated it! Point restrictions slowed that down, but it still goes on. We never do that now. At most, a guy will doing a little loop around to bump something up, slow an quietly. Finally got my doe last night.

I've never really understood the "driving" I understand it gets the deer moving but it's chaos and that's from a guy that runs deer with dogs. We have a lot more luck wind bumping and slipping through none bedding areas with standers blocking the escape routes on the downwind sides. Your shots are normally at much more relaxed deer as they themselves are trying to slip away without drawing attention to the perceived threat upwind

I loved doing the deer drives back when I was young. 25 guys all working together. But I can't physically do them anymore. Not in the mountains anyway

I've been out for a bit each morning. I saw a good one, one morning last week. Haven't gotten another chance. No luck yet though.
Took my son out for his first deer. It took us 5 nights, but he made a great shot on a three point.
This week has been pretty dead. We're supposed to get some snow in the AM. Hopefully that jump starts things.

We never did ‘bang the pot’ type of driving. We didn’t try to sneak but if you broke a branch or kicked a stone that was fine. It’s a chess match. If I send the drivers this way, where will the deer go today and where do I need to put the watchers to see them? Much more interesting and fun than sitting in a tree hoping a deer walks by.
There was usually a half dozen or so of us at camp. We would sit opening morning, then start driving. There were a couple of other family groups in the area that did the same thing. I miss the old gang.

Your state and your tradition and I really don’t care how others hunt. However when you get to a spot and go in only to have a drive go through 2 hours later is frustrating. Even more frustration when the [bleep] are parked behind and in front of your truck. We are talking 640,000 acres of public land. Just plain ignorant

Two things: Just because I don't do drives doesn't mean I sit on my ass all day 50-100 yards off the trail. There's no rule that says you can't take "meat" with archery equipment. I prefer to take a doe in early archery season. I just don't always get it done depending on circumstances.

And I’m tempering what I really think I’ve been sitting in a location when someone puts on a drive. I figure I have as good a chance of seeing deer as they do. And I’ve seen plenty of deer sneak back thru the drivers or out the side. Again a good chance of me seeing them if I’m there. I won’t purposely jump into someone’s drive but if I’m already there, well that’s the way it goes. And sometimes when they drive the next patch of woods, deer come into the patch they just drove. Makes for a much more interesting day when I get to see deer and not just the same patch of trees all day. My 2 cents. Can’t speak to the parking, that’s just rude on their part. Dale

And I’m tempering what I really think If they parked you in, that was ignorant. Beyond that, how would they know what direction you headed and where you were sitting on 640,000 acres? Even if they would somehow figure where you were, the drive was already planned out with watchers already in place or walking in, somewhere down the line. Chances are if they figured they were putting on a drive somewhere through where you were sitting they'd be more aggravated with that than you were with them, because there's a very good chance you would see or shoot a deer off of their drive. It works like Dale K stated above. I wouldn't want a drive coming through right after daylight, but soon as things are slow I'd welcome the sound of a drive somewhere in my area. Used to happen all the time around here and it moved deer. We always welcomed it after about the 2cnd day when deer tighten up and lock down.
One is alone in a land so vast, there is only the mountains, the wind, and the eyes of God.

Think on these numbers and realize what the Pa GC has done to the great Pa Rifle Deer season tradition.....7 weeks or so of archery....mostly crossbows these days....two weeks of rifle. The Pa GC loves the silent killers.
"Similar to past years, the regular firearms deer season accounted for the greatest part of the harvest figures. Firearms hunters took 251,520 deer, with 87,190 of those being bucks and the remaining 164,340 being antlerless.
Bowhunters accounted for a little over a third of the total deer harvest, taking 145,640 whitetails (75,770 bucks and 69,870 antlerless deer) with either bows or crossbows."
Come rifle season over 50% of the Bucks are gone.
And while point restrictions worked....we are killing much bigger and older bucks. It resulted in more posted land than any thing else the GC could have come up with.
The GC has become the keepers of the Raptors. Last time I looked we don't hunt them. One would think the Audubon Society would take them under their wing. Then with trapping almost dead and the nest and egg robbers having their way....let's add to it and release Fishers.
Let make the law purple paint on trees indicates this land is posted. What happens when someone else buys that land and wants to allow hunting? Are they supposed to go and repaint the trees another color? Or maybe people with just think it is still off limits and not hunt.
The Pa GC has turned into an arm of the left wing Pa politicians.

I can attest to the private land being posted. Being born and raised in the woods of central Florida everything down here that is private is posted. I was completely shocked when I started hunting pa back in the mid 2000s. Private property was basically open to the public for hunting with landowner encouragement to boot. Slowly over time more and more land is being posted with the passing of the torch to the next generation. It's sad. Pa is turning into a pay to play state just like Florida. Base camp leasing and the like are not helping

We also saw more partridge than years past. Not Maine numbers but more.

Have 56 acres of my own which has become my Alamo. Unless I'm willing to travel to the North State Land country. Which isn't a bad option.

Have 56 acres of my own which has become my Alamo. Unless I'm willing to travel to the North State Land country. Which isn't a bad option. I'm with you! My family has land Dad bought in 57, mom got remarried after he died, and my step dad who raised me hunted his old stomping grounds. We always left anyone who ask, hunt. Allowed locals to hunt when we caught them there, only running off outsiders. Eventually (step)Dad and I lost more and more of the places we hunted, as did others. So we started hunting our own ground. And It got...interesting. Folks had hunted that land for generations, without actual permission, and wouldn't accept no. Even doing damage to our gates out of spite. (Here is where opinion starts) the PGC played their own chicken crap games. "We aren't authorized to deal with trespassing, call the cops". The cops have other business not hunting related, and show up too late. Detailed rules about marking property, $50 fines for Plain trespass (one guy told me "Simple trespass is a $50 fine. Most landowners just run you off. It's hard for the others to prosecute, if they do...$50🤣🤣🤣 so maybe i get fined $50 every 2 or 3 years. That's a cheap fee to hunt wherever I F'ing want to. Guys pay hundreds to share 200 acres. Every year!🤣🤣🤣" I really believe that if PGC had protected landowners 30-40 years ago, more land might be open today. But PGC figured trespassing hunters bought licenses, land owners didn't give them as much $$$. Owners got tired of trespassers, the guys who asked for their kid and them, then brought 15 people. The 2 roster drives that clean a place out. The gate riders, fence cutters, litter bugs, drifting their 4x4 through the alfalfa, rutted up fields, gut piles in the fields...and they just went full POSTED. it's what we did to control our little slice. Nobody but immediate family. Not friends, not cousins, not the very same people we used to hunt with. I've got a decent chunk that I can hunt, and the BS has ruined it for me. Untold times I've went there, to hunt, for solace, to think about my deceased Father and Grandfather. Only to confront some SOB who skirted the gates, ignored the signs, and as often as not gets snotty with me when ask who they are and where they are from. That remote property is where I first started making a point of carrying a handgun. For protection, against "fellow" hunters who shouldn't even be there. What a post on a thread about our deer season. A happy thread!

Yeah he's the #2 all time buck for our camp now. Most times we shoot the first legal deer we get a shot at and are happy with the average ones. From time to time we get one of those whoopers. All in all it's not about the inches of antler for us but the chance to get together and laugh a lot while gaining a couple inches on the waist size

Our "deer camp" is the old family farm house. It was built in 1940 and is in Crawford county north west Pa. We are a rocks throw from Ohio.

My fishing camp is on the Ohio side of Linesville, not far from Ohio. Fish Pymo and Erie (out of Conneaut Oh) all summer. I live and hunt in 2E tho, Cambria county.

I hunt on the other side of Crawford County - our lease border is Warren Cty. I've hunted on both sides of the border on the western end of Crawford County - some nice bucks in that area.

Where in Cambria, I’m just outside Bedford.
No pics, saw what’s almost certainly my biggest buck ever while hunting Saturday. 125yards in the brush. Was with my daughter, he only gave us 1 chance walking through a 4 foot opening. She couldn’t make that shot, and was in front of me. I wasn’t happy to do it, I wanted her to get a chance. So, we watched him walk out of our lives for about a minute. Not a bad deal for two folks walking up deer, actually HUNTing. Maybe a missed opportunity, but a priceless hunting experience.

I'm not posting mine, any who want to hunt it can. If I make it off limits I become part of the problem that I don't like. It is primarily locals anyway and other than the first day I can hunt theirs. Which gives me around 500 acres or so. Although I have some timber guys working on making it more attractive. Left the good nut producing trees and essentially opened places for new growth...The one bordering neighbor saw what was going on and went in also. Be interesting to see how it works out.

I'm in a private campground that's only open 6 months out of the year so I don't get to spend time up there during hunting season. I have tons of state gamelands to hunt here in the mountains where I live too so I have it pretty good.

Battue, Good for you and your neighbors. Until Gary Ault, I could go almost everywhere around here. It was only “Imports” who posted or denied hunting. Now everyone posts, and we have tooooooooo much land being bought by imports. Basically all the bigger parcels, locals can’t afford it.
Skank, Now I remember the conversation, not certain the location. It was up Carrolltown way?

Armstrong…. Little town of maybe 40 homes. Which is were I’m originally from and all relations on my Mothers side still live. The entire county and the surrounding ones are mostly posted up.
It is what is left of my Grandparents old ground. I was fortunate that I got it back in 1970. I guess I can be looked at as an import😁, but I’m related to more than a few. Big thing is I make an effort to get along. None of that timbering ruined any of their home backyard views..

There is an old summer resort in the cove my maternal roots are, it was bought by Officers Christian Fellowship. A Christian military officer group. They come there to recreate, the buy up all the land in the area to retire to. I hate them with a purple passion! As a group, in theory. However, most of them are great people once you get to know them. (In a whisper) some are even friends. It's a heck of a thing trying to dispise folks you like, who are only doing to me what i'd do to others if i could afford to buy up land in a few other states!

Our farms are enrolled in a PGC access program, have been for years. Most of the neighbors were too. Not so much anymore. Plus lots of new houses in places I used to hunt.

I do that to a smaller scale. I selective cut some trees every year to release the good trees, mostly oaks and black cherry. If it's a good tree to burn, I'll drop it. If not, then I'll girdle and leave it in place. Some stuff gets hinged. Then as new stuff gets established from the increased sunlight, I'll protect the desirable trees with tree tubes.

Got a fine 9 pointer, a few busted points, but he's solid, at 7 FEET with " Boop". She's my May of '79 production Remington 760 .35 Remington. The load was a 200 round nose Core Lokt over 45gr of Hodgdon LVR. Chrono'd velocity is 2280 fps and he took ALL of it. Even recovered the bullet! .670 diameter and 150.4 grains. It got a rib going in, the front of the right lung, the left lung practically ran through my fingers when I removed it, 3 ribs on the left and was under the hide. He came through the corn like a tank! Almost ran me over! He's panting, I'm slack jawed. Don't know who was more surprised! I eye locked him and SLOWLY raised the rifle. Caught the scope in my peripheral vision and saw white... brown... BOOMFLOP! Got a little on me... My first buck in 8 years. Thank You LORD!!!!

Yep Karl, I'm real close to Carrolltown (closer to Patton). My boy works at K-metal.

That is so sad what has happened to hunting in Pa. It used to be fun. Now, sad. Last time I hunted there was about 2015. Deer were nice, but the good times were over. I never hunted near Patton, but used to hunt near La Jose quite often. Enjoy what you can.

Do any of you lease property around the Conneaut lake area? Have a line on a small farm that I may be able to lease. Down here the going rate is 10-12 dollars an acre. However down here is not up there. Any thoughts would be welcome.

Still wondering? Anybody got any ideas Send a PM to bwinters. I know he leases some land (or did) up here. It's the next county over from Conneaut Lake, but should give you a good idea. He's posted on this thread.

Not too many people lease around here. I know there is a hunting club that leases about 1500 acres for around a thousand dollars. But I'm not sure on the details. only what I heard around the neighborhood.
In my area, the hunting seems to be getting better every year. the bucks are getting bigger and more prevalent. Used to be you'd hear of one "nice" one. Now you hear of 5 or six. I saw a pretty good 8 point the first week. But never crossed paths with it again.

Conneaut lake area has had several die offs the last several years due to that midge disease.
Is leasing in PA a common thing nowadays? Hell.

Wasn’t there something in Crawford County ? Hemorrhagic disease?
Not related but one of the deer I shot was covered with Keds. I sat in a spot for a couple of hours and had them on me. What is up with that?

My buddy who lives close to the Pymatuning management area said the same thing. He found numerous dead deer in/around his house. In the other end of the county, we have no such thing. I will say the Pym WMA Hass had die offs through the years that didn't sem to happen anywhere else.

There were days in archery season I just left the Woods because they were too bad. That's never happened before

EHD. Epizootic Hemorrhagic Disease. Western PA and even Eastern to an extent gets hit with it every few years. Biting midges infect the deer. A cold snap puts an end to it

"Biting midges"
Wonder if they are more prone to hatches because of the lakes, Pymatuning and Conneaut?
I'm about 20 minutes North of Conneaut Lake.

I think so. My buddy found a pile of dead deer last summer. He lives literally across from the northern end of the Hartstown swamp. The Pymatunimg goose mgt area has been hit several times in the past 30 years.

I think the swamp/ goose mgmt. area has the perfect storm. Stagnant water, lots of concentrated deer. Nature does what nature does, never fun to watch and almost always seems the big boys get hit the hardest.

Sssshhhhhh……. Let everyone keep thinking there are no deer and PA sucks!!! Haha Not a bad plan haha. The bucks that I have on my cameras have been getting better and better every year. Shot a 140 class buck a few years ago on public land. I cant complain

we lease about 1600 acres, river bottom cornfields and draws , to hardwood ridges and old farmland. we have some spots that flood the cornfields every year that we have permanent duck blinds on. we have 2 goose pits in corn fields. a bunch of switch grass barriers along property edges and water holes, Switch grass borders around small food plots, some hinge cut areas we have some cover areas of a switchgrass Pea mix that is really good at handling snow loads. A non-commercial bird preserve permit lets us stock and hunt pheasant from Sept 1 through April. we shoot some really good bucks and a whole bunch of doe every year. and we post he ever living crap out of it and are relentless with prosecuting those found trespassing.
