Three people were shot Sunday afternoon in Todd County Kentucky in a dispute over who had permission to hunt a certain property. I was waiting to post a link to the story, but the cops are still investigating. Apparently, the property had been sold and the hunter who had permission was trying to get the three hunters to leave, a teenager, his father, and grandfather. The three didn't want to leave, and jumped on the one guy and started hitting on him, and he in turn shot the three. I knew those involved, and the teen is still in a Nashville hospital, with his father and grandfather treated and released. The shooter was also taken to a hospital and treated and released. Details are still sketchy, but I was told that the shooter purposely shot the three family members to wound, rather than to kill.

This happened fairly close to where I live, and I saw the grandfather in town today with his foot all bandaged up. My thinking is that it was a pretty stupid thing to do to provoke an argument over who had permission to hunt, to the point where it ended up with people shot. Somebody should have their azz kicked over this.

There are many who are firm in the belief that there is no crime so egregious nor punishment too severe for the act of crossing a property line regardless of the reason for doing so.

If the shooter weren’t the owner, he should be in prison with the others

I’ll withhold full judgment until all the info comes out, but there is a thing called “disparity of force”. If you’ve got 3 armed men (even one being a healthy-sized teenager) jumping you (after simply notifying them that ownership has changed), all with access to high-powered rifles, there’s certainly a possibility it could be justified (assuming fight was ongoing, and the three weren’t retreating).

I’m betting BOTH parties are now wishing they’d simply withdrawn to their respective corners (or perhaps left completely) and simply notified the authorities….

This is one of the reasons I bought a 117 acre place in 1987 so we as a family would have a place to hunt. By the grace of God and good luck we have acquired a few more places so we don't end up with questions about who has the right to hunt.

The original place we bought was $400 dollars an acre and now would easily bring $4000 so I realize it ain't quite as cheap nowadays.

Seen it/heard it before except the trading shots part.
Yeah, it's always " Ol' mr. So-and-so has always
let us do whatever we wanted to on this here
piece o' land. I done been fishin' en huntin' here
for 30 year, en so has muh son en muh grandson."

"Well mr. So-and-so don't own it anymore "

"Wal he ain't tol us any different "

" He can't. He's been dead for 3 years and I've
owned it for 2 "

Or it's a well gauger that drives a company
truck and has the keys or combination to the
gate, and think that entitles him to do whatever
he wants to since he has access

Or a neighbor that watches you come and
go and uses ( and has been using) the property
for his personal hunting/fishing lease, even
though he has as much or more land of his
own to do whatever he wants to legally

The way things go these days, I'd be reluctant to notify "the authorites." It seems "the authorities" are interested in only finding some way to fuck over any individual they happen to have interactions with for any reason at all---guilty or not.

No, he should have left the scene. None of the hunters have an obligation to show each other the signatures on the permission paper so its better to leave and let the owner and law deal with it.

Never said the folks shouldn’t defend themselves but anyone there taking the law into their own hands not even being their property makes for a [bleep] Thanksgiving and they all have a part in it.

"Sure you can hunt, and if you see any other ass wipes out there, kick them down the road." Now you are an agent of the property owner.

Perhaps money changed hands, or work was exchanged for hunting privileges. Now it is a lease. You don't own your house, but you have a lease on it? Do you have the right to eject trespassers?

Lots of possibilities.

Years ago in my young and dumb years a big acreage land owner gave me exclusive permission and asked me to kick trespassers off if I seen them jump a fence. It was always out of town big city folk that knew a $25 trespassing ticket was a small price to pay for a place to sneak in and hunt so they didn't give two chits about a posted sign. I ran a few off and they always left without much of an argument, but I got sick of running them down instead of doing my own hunting. That stuff is best left to the guys wearing the badge.

Chi Vang was the guys name I believe. If memory serves me correct, he took the time to remove the scope from his SKS before he shot them all. They should have just found a rope and a tall tree.

Don't confuse this Kentucky hunting story with the one the OP posted..

These two guys shot and killed themselves over the weekend while attempting to hunt and walk at the same time but in a completely different county.

Hunters accidentally shot themselves in separate incidents in same county, sheriff says

Nov. 13, 2023
GARRARD COUNTY, Ky. (WKYT) - Two hunters are dead after two separate incidents in Garrard County over the weekend.

We’re told 77-year-old Russell Stillwell, of Indiana, was killed in the first incident Saturday morning in the Buckeye community.

Then, on Sunday, 26-year-old Benjamin Brogle, Jr., of Garrard County, was killed in an incident in the northern part of the county.

Sheriff Willie Skeens says both men were walking when they accidentally shot and killed themselves. Skeens tells us he has never seen anything like this in 30 years of law enforcement.

This is a developing story.

Chi Vang was the guys name I believe. If memory serves me correct, he took the time to remove the scope from his SKS before he shot them all. They should have just found a rope and a tall tree.
I remember the story well. It happened on a Sunday afternoon. That is the worst day of the week for alcohol related disputes. A hunter found the Hmong in a stand on private property and called in reinforcements that showed up and there apparently began some cursing and threatening toward the Hmong by a large group of mid-westerners intent on convincing Vang of the error of his ways. As he was leaving on foot one of landowner group shot in the ground behind him to add emphasis to their order to leave. Vang turned around and started shooting, probably with an SKS or an AK. He certainly was wrong to trespass which from my time with the Federal agents in Michigan I learned that is what Hmong do and they kill everything they see.

But firing a round toward an armed man especially a battle hardened man is a really bad idea. If I remember correctly one of the men he shot was running toward an ATV upon which there was a rifle.

I would suspect alcohol fueled a lot of this and I'm not talking about Vang.

Does have only a few teeth cause you to talk with a lisp, or is that just because your mother and father were brother and sister as well.

Personally, I would never confront an armed hunter afield, whether I was right or wrong. Who knows what is running through a stranger's mind?

I don't even confront my wife when she is holding a frying pan. lol

The Vang incident is a couple miles from where we hunt.

I knew the Croteaus , slightly , who were killed.

They were a -holes. Never had anything to do with them.

Vang , after the shooting walked up to a young local cop , Knew him also, and turned himself in.

Fun times in the woods .

Other stories cannot be told.

I confronted two guys tearing around my old lease. I was able to walk up on them. Both were armed and I had left my rifle back where I started. It all turned out well and I felt being armed would or could have changed the tone of things. I wasn't being a prick and they knew exactly why I stopped them and made up some story about a stray getting out. I got their names no problem. It might have helped that the landowner was the county judge.

I had game wardens jump me and a friend hours after dark in the middle of the lease. I had stopped and they almost hit my truck. I complimented them on their stealth and was able to show I was not spotlighting deer. Admitted yes my guns were loaded and yes we were having a drink ( our first) but were looking for coyotes and more hogs after killing some earlier. I showed them the dead hogs I "spotlighted"- we were checking for varmints on the carcasses. They saw me stop inside the gate and I told them that is when I retrieved my rifle so I was not on the roads with it. .but were respectful and I asked them to catch the bastards who left a dead hog near my blind. Friggin hate road hunters and poachers.

So you are not far from where I hunt on the Price / Sawyer co. Wi. line. As for me, I am having problems too with a very rich woman with nothing to do that has 49 ac. net to me.. She posted my land and some Price co. land ... I called Price co. forestry and told them they are posting public land . The sign was gone last week, but the sign that is on my land , I kept it there cause I know she is getting it surveyed. Even though I am sure it is my land , I will prove it to her when she hands over the $6,000 survey check and then there will be no denying . It can really burn a guy up when people pull that crap and then play stupid when caught, and the money they payed for the land 3 yrs. ago tells me they know very well where the lot lines are. . We will see on Friday if it is surveyed and her corner post is my corner post too. It was not hard to play that one . Just be careful out there . The public land she posted is a small spot but an old man hunts there and is only 100 yds from the road and down a high tension wire. That burned me up even more to try to kick off that old man . He is likely partly disabled too.

Oh, speaking of Burqas, a recent VA poll showed that 85% of the 62% of Virginians that voted for Ghazala Hashmi, did so because she was a Muslim.

Oh, speaking of Burqas, a recent VA poll showed that 85% of the 62% of Virginians that voted for Ghazala Hashmi, did so because she was a Muslim.

Believing that Muslims are goat and sheep fuqkers, they considered her Family

For a guy that has never been to the Virginias... you sure as fugg know all about Virginias.

This happened in my area last month.

AVERY COUNTY, N.C. — A fight Saturday night over a deer led to a deadly shooting in Avery County, the sheriff’s office said.

Deputies said it started when neighbors, one of whom is a detention officer, got into a fight on Teaster Valley Lane in the Banner Elk area.

Investigators said that officer, Brendan Smith, is accused of shooting and killing his neighbor, Mike Houser.

Deputies said the field next to where Houser was living is where he died this weekend. His girlfriend said they planned to get married there.

“He was a wonderful man that loved me, loved our dogs, loved our grandkids,” she said. “We never actually got married and we were supposed to get married by the river.”

No one is charged at this point, but the State Bureau of Investigation is looking into the shooting because the officer works for the sheriff’s office.

Witnesses said Smith, who lives directly across the Elk River, was bow hunting Saturday evening. They said one of his arrows struck a deer that then crossed the river and collapsed in the field in front of Houser’s home.

Witnesses said that’s where the two men got into some sort of argument, which Houser’s girlfriend says was heated.

Heidi Teaster and her father live nearby and are stunned this happened.

“A deer -- over a deer. He could have drove away,” she said. “He could have just drove away.”

Deputies said Smith, who was off duty at the time, remained at the scene. He’s now on administrative leave while the SBI investigates.

“It’s pitiful that you have to take someone’s life over a deer that shouldn’t have ever been done,” neighbor Terry Teaster said.

We asked the sheriff’s office if Houser possibly had a weapon. They couldn’t comment about the investigation, but did say only one weapon was found at the scene.

Fair enough...

Those sheep biting incidents are probably a very private matter for many...

Seriously? We’re not talking public land here. Hunting where you aren’t allowed on private property is trespassing. Theft, really. Shoot me if you have to, but I’m not putting up with that chit.

The three didn't want to leave, and jumped on the one guy and started hitting on him, and he in turn shot the three.

Too bad Wisconsin didn’t have the death penalty. Hmong prick sure deserved it.

Yeah, there is a lot more to that story.

I was withholding judgement until I learned what weapons were involved. A 6.5 Creedmore owner would be guilty automatically. 😂

I don't recall reading the story that way, but then again it may have been reported differently years ago. As I recall, the daughter found Chang in the deer stand and retrieved her father to help her remove him. Chang killed them both and then a manhunt ensued by family members.

John, you and I are certainly on the same page here.
So if someone was hunting on your property without permission, you’d just allow it? What if he stole your truck? Drank your beer? Banged your wife?

Where would you draw the line?

There are ways to handle things without acting like a hot-headed [bleep] and either shooting someone or getting shot.

No way in hell I am letting them steal my truck or drink my beer.

Several years ago a young man that had worked for me occasionally driving a tractor moved to Arkansas and got into some sort of property dispute. He fired a warning shot at his neighbor and his neighbor shot him graveyard dead. No charges filed. Playing with guns while in a dispute is not a good idea unless maybe it's a carjacker or burglar and in that case it is best to try to hit your target.

In any case the news reports and the trial testimony do not support frogman 43's recollection of events. Vang was trespassing that is certain, He was accosted by a group of 8 armed hunters. He offered to leave. While walking away he turned around for some reason and began firing very accurate shots at the white folks that had demanded he leave. He certainly went into overkill which is what got him convicted. Some of the landowner representatives were shot in the back, possibly Mr. Vang thought they were going for firearms on the ATV.

The best thing to do is to tell someone to leave and if they do, go get a warrant for trespass if you can figure out who they are. Nowadays there are so many cameras out and almost everybody carries a phone with a camera. It would be hard for a trespasser to deny he was on the property. Firing a warning shot at an armed man is foolish to the nth degree.

I am still betting that there was alcohol involved considering it was the northern mid-west and Sunday afternoon.

The write-up leaned heavily on statements from the survivors and the shooter. Did they misquote the survivors? Was the article wrong about 4 of the victims being shot in the back? Was it wrong about the total number of people shot? Was it wrong about the background of the shooter? Was it wrong about the location? Was it wrong about the kind of rifle he used?

Souds like they have worked it out.

This could end up becoming another Hatfield/McCoy feud. Didn't that one get started with some rumors that one of those West Virginia rednecks was phugging his dog?

It's sad that people have to shoot each other over hunting permission. Years ago I learned that if someone else has permission and you don't, stay away from there. Until they go to church or it's foggy or snowing. Holiday get-togethers are another way to avoid getting caught. 11am on Thanksgiving morning, nobody is out looking for trespassers.

It's gratifying to know that threads such as this, which begin with dull and boring news items ,will almost certainly evolve into the much more valuable and informative practice of monkeys slinging their feces at one another.
