Running ARBs on a couple of trucks...

I picked the Joint Compound... always seems to do better on pneumatic.

Y'all?

Loctite 567 for air brake systems...teflon was a good invention for....selling teflon. Use 567 on DOT airbrake systems exclusively...it covers the sins of chinese made fittings.

Well this is a fine pickle we're in, should'a listened to Joe McCarthy and George Orwell I guess.

Very interesting... Thanks for bringing that up.

I've seen some pipe fittings that were very rough, nothing wrong with using both.

Teflon tape then dope for most things with water pressure. I see things leak with only one or the other pretty often, not sure if that's just installer error, but best to use both especially in a wall or something.

Tape on hydraulic fittings not good practice as you don't want flakes of tape in proportioning valves, etc. Use appropriate paste or liquid sealant.

Exactly. Gets caught in nozzle seats and solenoid valves as well. Made all our techs pull it off their trucks years ago.

I use Compound inside and out trying to fill all the threads.

Never had any issues

But I may be doing it all wrong because I am self taught.

Both do the same job...which is simply to lubricate the threads to facilitate deformation of the parent material within the tapered thread form.

The taper does the work.....the PTFE or any other compound is designed to provide the lubricant to allow for deeper seating without galling.

If you're relying on the paste to seal, you've got poorly cut thread forms.

I've had paste seal where tape cannot in certain situations...but it's a bandaid masking another problem

Neither tape nor paste should be applied on the first 1-2 male threads for reasons cited above.

Just retired from 40 years in the.oilfield. I have used lots of both and preferred tape. both will provide a leak free connection if used on decent threads. roll of tape fit in my pocket.

Same here, but dope first, then tape.

People seem to think Teflon tape is a sealer. It is not. Teflon tape is only a lubricant to allow the taper on the threads to seat deeper to make the seal from contact, not from the Teflon tape…

Ching Chang fittings suck! Most that you buy are cobbled together there.

Tape and dope has become the go to for a lot of plumbers, and I've had
brass fitting leak anyway. Even after trying the heavy tape and dope.
