Looking for radio recommendations to keep our group in contact while hunting. Some hills and timber to block signal. Maybe a mile apart between us at the most.
What have you guys had good luck with?
Hunt...

We used Ham radios for years in Wva and Virginia. They did pretty well. Baofeng are pretty popular now

MURS works well in that environment.

We always used walkie-talkies back when, than cell phones to text later.

No hand held radio is going to transmit through a hill.

In Reach? Or go low-tech with smoke signals? Worked for the Injuns.

No hand held radio is going to transmit through a hill. Do they have enough power to bend the signal around a hill? I think it’s called knife edge refraction.

No hand held radio is going to transmit through a hill. Do they have enough power to bend the signal around a hill? I think it’s called knife edge refraction. Usually in hunting, you're close to the side of the hill, which works against you. If you are away from the hill, then you might get better results, if you have enough power to reach. Lower frequencies will tend to follow the earth a bit, but VHF and UHF don't do that well. No self respecting deer is going to stay within 100 yards of the sound of a radio. I have quite a bit of ham and GMRS/MURS equipment and never took it hunting.

Check Repeater Book to see if there are open repeaters you can reach, and buy radios accordingly.

Check your state regulations for use if radios while hunting. Some states prohibit communication of game location and game movement.
Most type of handheld radios only broadcast line-of-sight. If you cannot find a public repeater to relay signals, you could consider using ham radios and setting up a mobile unit in your car as a repeater.
Adventure is the only thing you buy that makes you richer
