FINALLY got the USPS to hold up their end of the bargain and my RCBS 405 gr mold made it home today from Midway. Two weeks late but it's here, safe and sound.

THAT, is damn sexy chunk of lead.

As soon as deer season winds down around here y'all know what I'll be messing around with.

Thought you would've cut to the chase and acquired a 500 grain mold. Go big or go home. Sheesh.

Kidding of course. That's a classic design, gas check or not. Ought to work well for you. (Probably get away with leaving the GC off down around 1100fps, and mind you a 405 grain .45 bullet traveling at that speed is a fairly contentious object!)

Very similar to Lyman mold 457193 also specified at 405grs. They shoot great. Make sure the edges of the castings are completely filled out and sharp. Can't mold very fast or the sprue tears a hole in the base instead of a clean cut

I really like that mold, I bought it to use in my 1886 45-70. It proved to be pretty darn accurate. Shown in the middle with the other bullets I cast for the 45.

I think you're going to really like the bullets it casts. The bullet on the left is a Lyman 470 gr RN/GC that I used in my 74 Sharps for a number of years. As I get older that 470 just hurts to much so I use the 405 instead, pretty accurate in the Sharps too.

Unfortunately we are all getting older. I've no need for bear stomping loads in my big bores. Just busting shoulders on a few whitetails and having fun out on the farm plinking steel. So I load em down quite a bit. 5744 is one of my favorite powders for that. I'll play around with some different stuff with this mold and see what suits the needs. Been using a Speer 300 grain jacketed in my Marlin 45/70, but gonna switch it over to only cast with this bullet.

I use that mold for my 86 light rifle. You will get a good cast with a dipper fairly quick. Fug around with bottom pour will take longer. The 457193 I use with bp. You will run into oal problems with the 500 gr rn's in a lever gun..mb

Tried a bottom pour one time long enough to hate it and get rid of it. I can make really nice bullets with a ladle dipper.

Yeah, I don't think I need a 500 grain anyway. Lol.

Was going to wait until next fall to hunt with this mold and my 45/70, after some time to play around and develope a good load during the down time. It just so happens though that we have a late rifle doe-only season that goes way longer into the spring than I'm willing to kill a doe that's probably got a fawn. Just bred is one thing, but I don't have the stomach to go further than that.

But, January and early February would be PRIME TIME to add a couple more does to the freezer with home cast loads in that rifle. I'll give up a little bit of my late muzzleloader season to get a load worked up in time for that.

I've got that mould, a postal mould from Saeco, and some RCBS mounds and last year found an old Winchester 500gr 45cal rifle mould.

The FN 458’s work well on deer in about any weight but that mould is a favorite of many. From 1200 to 1800 all work well.

I've cast & shot that bullet a lot over the years. Mine is from an NEI mould Walt Melander cut for me when I had the bullet works. It's 420 grains ready to shoot.

I have this mould too and it is very accurate in my 45/70 rifles. Mine drop 0.459 from the mould.

RCBS use the same bullet profile for their 45FN moulds, so all have a crimp groove location that works well in leverguns. I also have RCBS’s 45-500FN and it works fine in leverguns. It does take up a bit of internal space but it does work.

I have shot a lot of those, cast in a buddy's mold. I just had a 4 cavity Accurate mold made. Exact same bullet.
