Ok, normally through process of elimination I can figure out what many stocks fit but this one has me stumped. It is a Boyd's so I don't have the benefit of matching finish or checkering patterns. I had thought it was for a Winchester 88 but it isn't. Here are a few things I am pretty confident of:
It is a centerfire lever or auto with a front magazine release. The mag well is 1/4 inch narrower than the 100 pictured next to it. The rear of the receiver has a "dolls head" style tang. The entire barrel channel area is inlet completely different than a W 100. The trigger group area on this is inlet more square where the W100 is more rounded.
I have checked Marlin 57 and Sako Finnwolf and neither fit. What other lever or auto's had a one piece stock with a front mag release? I had an H&R 308 auto many years ago but as I recall it wasn't front mag release. Any ideas, guess or thoughts?

Ruger 96? Maybe the cuts are so you could grab mag?

Nope. Rear receiver/tang is wrong. Sure looks like a Ruger rear tang though....

I thought 96/22 or 96/44 but I THINK they have a rear mag release and I wouldn't think the magazine inlet would be as long as a 308 case body. I will have to try to find a 96 to compare. I think they have a rear tang on the receiver but again, I just don't remember. THANK YOU for the suggestion.

I thought possibly 96 too but I think the 44 mag well in a 96 will be shorter than the Win 88/100s

The one on the right???

Someone sure tried like heck to copy the post-64 m88 checkering. From those pics it doesn't look quite right though.

You'd think if they had all that done it'd be a m88 replacement. But who knows.

Actually, the one on the left is the one in question. Boyd's put a LOT of work into this stock so I would like to know what it fits.

The really early Winchester M88had a cloverleaf tang/recoil block that was changed to a round design in later productions.

Well, that helps.......I think but the mag well is a full 1/4 inch narrower than a model 100. I may have to get an early 88 in my hands to see. Thanks all!

They don't put any identifying marks on them, just a date. I have been down that road before. They use a little paper stick to identify them and they come off easily. I wish they would stamp them on the butt.

Another 10-22 is the LAST thing I need. I am at the point where I think I could heat the garage all winter burning just 10-22 stocks. smile
