Fusion is a great choice. It tends to be readily available and it flat out works. This. A very good bullet and is available in factory ammo.

The 70 grain Speer semi-Spitzer is a bonafied deer killer and doesn’t need a fast twist. Super accurate in my Kimber. I’ve killed deer from 50-200 yards with that rig and the results were seemingly identical. Complete pass throughs with good expansion. I once killed a large boar pig with a single shot to the skull at 270 yards with that load. Instant death and an awesome audible thump on impact.

About 4:00 PM today I killed the third buck I’ve killed with a .223 this year. All three, like all the deer I’ve killed with .223’s the past 20 years at least, were killed with 65 grain Sierra Game Kings. I’ve used other .224 bullets to kill deer in the distant past, but cannot recall which ones.

He doesn't know the twist on his 223. I have concerns about the heavier bullets if he has a faster twist. It also needs to be readily available in factory loads. A faster twist is actually what he needs for the long heavies. I've had great success with the 75 grain eldm, 88 grain eld-m and the 77 grain TMK. I've read great things about the fusions. I've wanted to try them but have not been able to find any locally. Good luck with your endeavor and let us know if he succeeds and what he uses when he does.

Speer Trophy Bonded Bear Claws I would second that, have a bunch of 62 grainers, 62 grain Barnes be fine too.

I just bought 4 boxes of some Hornady 75gr. HPBT for trying out in a 1:7 twist POF Renegade. I'd ultimately like to handload some 70 gr. Barnes TSX for shooting hogs using the same brass.
I already have a .260Rem, shooting 120gr.Barnes TTSX for deer that's proved optimal for me. But I'm always looking for more ways to kill pigs with an AR.

I hunted with a guy who took his deer every year with white box Winchester 55gr sp’s. Never failed him. I’m a handgun hunter, but I’m going to give the .223 a try in one of my rifles next year. I’ve got all kinds of different bullets loaded. Bulk box’s of Hornady 55gr and 60gr SP’s to load. A bunch of Barnes X’s loaded up from a quite a few years ago. I love trying different loads and calibers on game!

Dunno about deer, but I found the old 5.56 FMJ ammo adequate for monkeys, pigs, water buffalo, dinks, and elephant. Placement is important.

But I’ve shot enough pigs with it to know that it’s poison if you hit bone. The upset/tumbling thing seemed very real from what I saw. Shots to the noggin of course are dramatically effective with about anything short of a Qtip.

I saw some factory Winchester power points loaded with 64gr bullets in my local wmt last week. I haven't shot a deer with one, but the Win 64gr Deer Season XP (Extreme Point) works just fine on pigs. I'm pretty sure the results would be the same on WT Deer.

I've always heard that the 70gr Speer is an excellent deer bullet. But I saw a box today on the shelf at a LGS and it says "VARMINT" in large letters on the box. Have they changed the design?

I use the 53gr Sierra on wild hogs, at 3250, with a 223 and as most every other cartridge/bullet combination placement is 99.9% of the deal. The 223 is pretty easy to shoot with real accuracy. Most critters I have shot with the 233 were shot with a scoped an accursed Mini-14. That bullet goes through a 300# hog, sided to side, with a heart shot. Blows a quarter sized hole out the off side.
Before my open heart surgery, I built a 6mm Mongoose AR-15, to shoot after the surgery, a bit more power, near the same recoil level, using 80 grain bullets, in a case based on the 223. Not a suggestion, just whay I did personally, having 223s as well.
