Got this buck on Tuesday, I’ve been hunting him hard from the start of bow season, almost got him November 8 but a doe took his attention. Shot him just before 7am 280yards, didn’t think I hit him no blood found for the first 80yards, then it was just a pin prick, followed blood on hands and knees for about 200yards until I saw him bedded and put an insurance round in him, it wasn’t needed though. 14.5” g2 he’s 5.5 was 208 dressed when we caped him out, zero fat on him from rutting

I used a 7-08AI with a 162Amax, My trusting 7wsm decided to loose the barrel while i was confirming zero before season, i much prefer the extra power of a 160gr accubond @3200 on these deer

Great buck, good fortune for sure.
Surprised by the lack of blood trail, particularly with that fist sized hole !

Surprised by the lack of blood trail, particularly with that fist sized hole ! He was facing towards me with a slight turn, I was aiming at the point of his shoulder to break him down (right on the property line and the neighbor had his horses in the pasture otherwise I would have let him jump the fence, great neighbors) the shot road down a rib or two before entering the body cavity

Very nice, love a heavy framed 8 (9). me too! weve got some 4.5 yr old 10s that will score way better, but this dude was cool, ive got an unhealthy obsession with tall tight 8s. i dont have many of them, theyre not super common in our area, he had really good mass which made it even better'

Awesome buck. Was the big hole the insurance round? Surprised he made it that far with the 162 amax. nope thats the first shot. For some reason, these deer around our area seem to be lead sponges, if you dont break them down they will run. I hunt illinois too, and it seems like these deer run on avg further on a heart/lung hit that the bucks ive taken in illinois. I have zero reason why, just seems to be what happens. I tend toward magnums, used to shoot a 300RUM that was the hand of god on them, but it was a tank, my 6.5lb 7wsm has been my go to for 12-13 years and has killed a pile of deer, 95% of them bang flops.

Nothing ive hunted with slaps them like a 300RUM with a 180-200+gr accubond@ 3300 though

Bullets do weird things. Coop do you thing maybe it clipped a twig or something first? I shot a doe a few years back. When I walked up I thought I had maybe guys hit her. But it was the exit, on the same side as the entrance. It was strange. But bullet flooower the spine and came out the same side.
