Awesome buck. Was the big hole the insurance round? Surprised he made it that far with the 162 amax. nope thats the first shot. For some reason, these deer around our area seem to be lead sponges, if you dont break them down they will run. I hunt illinois too, and it seems like these deer run on avg further on a heart/lung hit that the bucks ive taken in illinois. I have zero reason why, just seems to be what happens. I tend toward magnums, used to shoot a 300RUM that was the hand of god on them, but it was a tank, my 6.5lb 7wsm has been my go to for 12-13 years and has killed a pile of deer, 95% of them bang flops.

Congratulations not any more to the story, he was facing me slightly quartered, i was aiming at the point of the shoulder and pulled it a few inches, bullet rode down his side and zipped him open before entering the chest cavity. shot him like this so he didnt jump into the neighbors horse pasture from our property, was trying to break him down

These deer would take a 223 and beatcha over the head with it lol. ive killed exactly one deer with a .223 on the farm, out of necessity (long story) 160gr + bullets going 3000+ always win. Nothing ive hunted with slaps them like a 300RUM with a 180-200+gr accubond@ 3300 though
