Looking for a nursery that would have a good price on some cold hardy apple trees. Looking for zone 3 or 4. Thinking around 50-100. A decent eating size apple not crabs.

You might also look at Stark Nursey out of Missouri. I have gotten several trees from them and their prices are fair. Their roots are not well developed and we have had a drought for the last 4 years and August always gets them. Too hot and too dry. They are having a cyber Monday sale today so prices should be good. Just be prepared to dote over them or keep them in a pot until after August and late fall plant them. Everything I have kept in a pot until fall has done well. The bare root plants come absolutely bare root so be prepared to spend some time with them until the roots start growing out. I planted a pear tree last week that was bare root when it arrived. When I planted it, I pulled down some of the roots to let them expand out and I was surprised just how much root they gained over the summer. Stark Bros.I bought my apple tree (Honey crisp) from Fleet and Farm late in the season when they were clearing them out. I transplanted it to a pot of garden soil and used Earl Mays plant starter and after about 3 weeks it was leafing out like an old pro. When I transplanted it from the bag it was in I didn't think it had a chance but I was wrong. Anyway, I think I got the tree for like $18. I left it in the pot and I put it in my basement a couple of days ago and that is where it will stay until the end of April. I wish I had room for 50 trees. At $18 a pop I could afford to plant a bunch of them. I just don't have the room. We are in Zone 5 and supposedly they are good for zone 5. I can't tell you how much I like Earl May's plant starter liquid fertilizer. ON a couple of sick looking trees I also dropped in a cheap 250mg aspirin. I don't know exactly which product worked miracles but even the sick ones survived with that combination. kwg

Also look for Chinese chestnut. You will need more than one but they are a great mast crop to have and bear every year.

I just placed an order at this place for Spring delivery. I have never ordered from them before but I talked to others that have. Great prices as far as I am concerned.

Not sure from the OP if the question was about apples for people, animals, or both. If you’re looking for groceries for the animals, CBB is right about diversifying with chinese chestnuts or you could go with Dunstan chestnuts. Dunstans are fast growers in zone 5A and produce early (at 5yo).

I've grown some stuff from Gurneys and I've been less than impressed. They never seem to do well. I think Burgess and Gurney are likely the same company. Their catalogs are almost identical along with their low quality.

If you are not actively engaging EVERY enemy you encounter... you are allowing another to fight for you... and that is cowardice... plain and simple.

I live within 30 miles of Starks and have bought several fruit trees from them. Some have been planted long enough to bare fruit and are doing great.
