Curious if there is a difference in brands ie. CCI, WW, Federal, etc., as to bullet jacket thickness/hardness.

Anyone shot Hogs, etc with these bullets where you needed deeper penetration than a JHP?

The Winchester FMJ is a true cup/core jacketed bullet and is considerably tougher than the CCI TMJ which is plated. The Winchesters penetrate much better.

Lots, if YouTube is to be believed. Watch a bunch of reviews and tests and make a somewhat educated guess.

Just getting started with a new on myself, and fortunately, it’s putting several good ones in very nearly the same place at 50 yards. I want one good ‘sploder, and an edible game load. For now, going with the Hornady 30gr VMax for the first and the Federal 50gr Game Shok for the second. No piggies here, just yotes, foxes, squirrels, and turkeys.

Friend of mine has a father in law with a big dairy farm. Shot quite a few down cows over the years. He always swore by the regular Winchester 40 gr fmj out of his Marlin. Helping to butcher beef and hogs for years I'd tend to agree with him.

Great stuff, yes I watch many videos, but thought others might have cut to the chase, they are endless vids to watch.

The 50 Grain Federal will give minimal, if any, expansion and penetrate deeply. Do a little research on it. One of my guns loves it, one is okay with it and one won't stabilize it.

Back when I was shooting gallon water jugs, I tried a fmj 40 grain Winchester and it went through 5 and was in #6 six if I remember right. That was about 2x what the jhp did.

For coyotes it is hard to beat the Winchester 40gr JHP.

My.marlin 882 shoots those 30.gr v maxes great. Tried the WW Dynapoints which are plated in it, they leaded that microgroove barrel very bad..mb

Growing up in woodchuck country I shot a 22 Magnum as the first rifle I ever bought. I learned on my Dad's Winchester 67 but graduated to the 22 Magnum at 13 when my trapping funds permitted.

Locally the stores all carried Winchester 22 Magnum but it was hit or miss on whether it would be FMJ or HP so I got what was available. I noticed woodchucks getting down the hole with a body hit from the FMJ when the same placement with an HP would anchor them. It made me be a bit more selective on my shots, trying for a CNS when I had FMJs in hand.

Even today, fifty years later, the Winchester 40 grain HP is my 22 Magnum round of choice.

Those FMJ's work well on feral hogs, too. Even .17 HMR FMJ's are hard on hogs.
