Wabigoon: Yes, I have caught many Burbot in the last 25 years since I took up "ice fishing" - probably 30+ of them.
They are wonderful to eat. Many folks refer to them as fresh water Ling Cod. My biggest weighed 5 pounds but my friends on the ice have caught them to 8 pounds or so.
I have caught most of them at night but a few were caught during the early daylight hours.

Caught a few while ice fishing when I lived in MN. I never caught any from open water.

We don't have them around here, so it's unlikely I'll ever catch another.

My MN. buddy would trade you walleye for burbot and that is saying something because he knew his way around in the kitchen.

Burbot are the only true freshwater cod, which explains why they taste so good.

Lingcod are not true cod, or even close. They are actually very closely related to greenling.

We used to catch huge numbers through the ice.

Caught quite a few of them up at the Angle on the ice. About the only fish that will splash a bobber when they hit. Predators.

No I haven't. I don't fish through the ice much and that seems to be how and when they are caught in these parts. No idea why that is.

Yep, a bunch through the ice, never in open water, even though the same lakes.

They spawn in winter, so they are a lot more active during peak ice season than during open water time.

My uncle caught one in a creek on a Vibrax spinner, we were salmon fishing and at the time I had no clue what it was and threw it back.

Caught and ate many through the ice later. Good eating fish.

That's pretty much exactly what I did too. Fishing for Salmon at the mouth of Montana creek and hooked this ugly looking fish I had no Idea what it was.
