Gents,
I was reading something -- it might have been an old catalog -- that mentioned a Super Grade M70 having a bakelite forend tip. Without ever really thinking about it, I guess I just assumed that on older M70s, the forend tip was really ebony, not synthetic or dyed hardwood. So, my question for you M70 experts: were factory super grades ever leaving New Haven with real ebony forend tips or was it always a lookalike/alternative material?
Thanks y'all.

Huh. I've got admit that's kind of disappointing in a way. Not that they aren't fantastic looking rifles... I just liked to imagine that, at some point in "the old days," they were really using ebony and not synthetic.

Haha I can hardly afford the ones with bakelite... so maybe it's a good thing they weren't sporting real ebony.

For pocano … 1936 WWSG&A Pocket Catalog Winchester never used the proprietary Trademark name ‘Bakelite’ in its literature although the ‘black molded forestock tip’ was undoubtedly Bakelite. The Winchester Model 54 Super Grade also featured a molded forestock tip of the same material. Thanks AK
