In my experience, recoil pads are rarely a perfect fit. I would suggest a pre-fit Decelerator or something similar. The Remington pads weren't very soft anyway.

My reason for 2 3/4 is the receiver is not marked magnum so just trying to be safe for anyone else, if they see 3 ‘’ on the barrel they’ll use a 3’’ shell.

ASU...a 2 part question sir...You are WTB a matte finish 20 gauge barrel...is that to match the matte finish of the receiver, of a Remington 870 "EXPRESS"...or a Remington 870...all EXPRESS receivers are magnum receivers...the EXPRESS has also gone away...as the MAGNUM markings have...but all Remington 870's built from 1987 on were built with a "magnum" capable receiver...(well except for some high dollar TRAP guns)...and SUPER MAGNUM in 12 gauge gets you up to 3 1/2" capable...so the question is...What does the roll stamp mark on the receiver say?, and what is the finish on the receiver ? And a follow up...Your post says that the receiver says EXPRESS...does the serial number end in the letter "M"...early EXPRESS models didn't have the MAGNUM stamp but the "M" suffix designated a magnum receiver, as they all were, but newer EXPRESS receivers do not have the "M" suffix but are magnum capable.

And lastly... is the recoil pad for a wood stock or plastic stock? They are different.

First Thanks for the reply and information .I just received a call back from Remington and they pretty much said the same thing you did about the receivers and magnum markings. So now I can confirm what I need for a barrel .As far the recoil pad I did know that wood and synthetic are different and should have put that in the post.
Thanks again for your help
