Even the High Heat will burn off. Let it rust. It will develop its own patina.

With my special welding techniques I wouldn't have the need for any drain holes in the bottom, mine would leak like a sieve.

How bout yours?

5/32. 6010, pieces of cshit, flux doesn’t fall off one side as it burns, you have to keep tapping rod against metal as you burn, but they are good enough for this project. Those rods probably 35 years old.

How did you bend the round bar? Thickness?

Weld and bend as you go around?

If you take the time it takes, it takes less time.

This is a 1” bar. They were out of 3/4, the 1” was a little harder to bend. I tack the bar on the plate, heat about 3”” of bar red hot, turn fire pit, heat about another 3”, turn pit. Then tack what I have bent, repeat until I’m all the way around. This is 12 feet around the damn thing. It dresses it up a little, took a couple of hours to get it on there.

Put rod around these about a year ago

Kinda partial to 7014.
Anything that's easier and makes me look less bad.

Thanks for the answer hanco. The round bar really is a nice touch to the top.

Looking great!

Being as it's trying to rain here this morning, I got to wondering if you are going to leave it solid on the bottom, or put some drain holes?

Probably leave it solid, keep it under cover except when I’m going to use it. No trouble to move with tractor. I learned my lesson with a bbq pit, sucked to remove rusted out firebox and replace it.
