I found a nice used Winchester M70 extreme weather SS today. It's a 30-06 with what looks like a bell and Carlson synthetic stock and a fluted 22" barrel.
It felt about right to me balance wise and the price seemed good so I grabbed it. It's assembled in Portugal and although I've had m70 stainless classics before this I'd my first Portuguese gun. How are these series guns?
It looks well made so I'm excited to see how it shoots. If it shoots well it may be my new traveling gun or go anywhere do anything rifle. I've always been a fan of 30-06 and have always felt like it's a good one to have one trips.
I might have to load up some of my old loads from long ago for doing anything. I used to load 200g partitions over a heavy charge of h4831sc for about 2700 fps. There wasn't much that wouldn't do under 500 yards. My longer range one was the same charge under a 208 amax. I recently bought a bunch of 225g eldms for half price so I'll see what I can get those up to as well. Starline also finally delivered my new 30-06 cases so I have a matching lot again.
I've always liked the way a 30-06 feeds and being able to load it with 5 rounds. Most bullets seem to work well at 30-06 speeds too. I'm hoping this shoots well.

If it doesn't shoot well I'll probably have it rebored to a 338-06 or 9,3x62. They had all their used guns 10% off today so I only paid $675 and it's in excellent shape.
I haven't been this excited about a rifle in a while. I have an older m70 stainless classic in 243 that still has its old elite 3200 3-9x40 on it and that little rifle shoots really well so I hope this 30-06 does too. They'll make a nice combo.

That was a heck of a good deal. If I can across it at that price I wouldn’t be able to pass it up.

Congrats! I just picked up the same rifle except I paid a bit more. New M70 EW 30-06 from Portugal and topped it with a 3.5-10 x 40 Twilight. Looking forward to some quality break-in time when the snow and wind slows down. I have a pre-64 Mod 70 30-06 Gov that's a real tack driver, but I'll be happier showing it off at the range while I drag the EW out in moose weather.

Very good snag at that price. I have one in .30-06 and one in 6.5 Creedmoor love both of them . I let one in .338 Win mag slip away and still regret it. Great shooting rifles!!!!!!

Like others have said, that was a very good price. Well below even current market value. I've had a couple of these rifles and liked them but for whatever reason they didn't stick around. That said, I've never had one of my own, or known of one that didn't shoot well. I'm sure there are some but these BACO Winchesters have generally been solid shooters and I'll be surprised if it isn't an easy MOA rifle.

Bb I had a blast using the 212 ELD with my 30-06. Got about 2700 and man, made the 06 seem a lot bigger than what it is. You got a good rifle. Hoping it shoots well for you. Good chance you’ll enjoy the heck out of it.

Huh, I also just picked up the same gun from my FFL last night, we'll have to compare notes! Range report on the head to head shoot off you guys have. Looks like there are 3 of you that bought the same rifle. I'll give points awarded to the OP for using the right bullet in his though. He's ahead, so you other 2 have some catching up to do. 5 shot groups and no cherry picking!! I also had one chambered in 30-06. I hated the stock, so put it in a Mcmillan: That made all the difference in the world. For accuracy, it always threw a first shot flier: It was a damn nice rifle, but eventually got sent down the road. I still have a preference for the Classic's and pre 64's.
I try to stick with the basics, they do so well. Nothing fancy mind you, just plain jane will get it done with style. You want to see an animal drop right now? Shoot him in the ear hole. BSA MAGA

You'll have to wait a bit, currently fitting mine to a Bansner /Miller stock.

You'll have to wait a bit, currently fitting mine to a Bansner /Miller stock. Be interested in knowing how you like that stock. Against my better judgement (long story about McMillan and their "quality control") I just ordered another McMillan Edge for my Stainless Classic Featherweight 30-06. I was giving the Bansner a good look before I ordered but ended going with what I know over trying the Bansner. Now the question is how many times I'll have to send the McMillan back before they get my order right? Anyone want to wager?

For me the ergo's of the McMillan Hunters Edge completely suck compared to the standard Bansner M70 stock. I've had about 1/2 dozen McMillan Hunters Edge's for M70's. I got rid of my last one a few years back and will go Bansner's from here on on out.

This should make my model 70 in 270 Winchester all the better. Take care.

I don't find the Hunters EDGE all that bad, saying that, I'll be using the Bansers Miller Classic's from here on out I believe.

The Miller looks good. I need to pull the trigger on one of these stocks.

The only thing wrong with that stock is that the forearm is a little to short for a 24" barrel, not quite as bad with a 22", but still a little short. MM
