I've had a half dozen custom hats made by Mike Miller at Northwest Hat Co. in Eugene, Or. My last one ordered was $475. for 100X beaver, and should be finished by Christmas. Mike Miller puts a device on your head and adjusts it to your exact head size and shape, Then makes your hat to fit this.
They go up every time I get a new one, but still a great hat at a reasonable price.
Virgil B. That's awfully cheap for a 100x

Virgil B. That's awfully cheap for a 100x 100x is nothing but a marketing strategy. In the real "X" rating, a 4X felt is 40% beaver fur. A 10X is 100% beaver. Anything over 10X is just hype. As an afterthought... maybe that valuable beaver fur is the reason you don't see a furry beaver anymore...?

I notice that my well to do rancher neighbors, the ones shipping more than 5 truckloads annually have tendency to wear NAPA auto parts gimme caps, John Deere caps or Monsanto caps.
Well this is a fine pickle we're in, should'a listened to Joe McCarthy and George Orwell I guess.

It’s important to spend $400 on a hat, to acquire the look of that mean guy on Yellowstone that rolls around in a black utility bed and aviators beating the shît out of 20 bikers single-handedly.

$1000 hat, holy chit. That's new gun money. Even though I agree, truth be told, that phrase flipped is probably just as often stated in the U.S.: "$1000 gun, holy chit. That's new hat money.".

All felt cowboy hats come pretty much creased and styled from the factory now... I remember a time when hats came with a crown height and a brim length. Then you got busy on that steamy hat creaser and made it look like what you wanted. Even today, when I buy a new hat, I have to crease it to fit "me". I prefer it that way. I also prefer some 19 year old kid working at Cavender's not touch my hat with a steam creaser.

As an afterthought... maybe that valuable beaver fur is the reason you don't see a furry beaver anymore...? There is no existing industry standard for what “X” means. Different companies will claim different X for % of beaver felt. You need to find out % not X. Rand hats have been recognized in the past as a high quality custom hat. Comparing it to Stetson and Resistol is not even close. I do have a Stetson that was made when Stetson actually made a high quality hat. My father bought it new in the 1940’s and it is “Clearnutria” which is another high quality felt. Compare the Rand to a Rocky Mountain Hat company hat, and you will find that the Rocky Mountain is a better made hat and is still in business making hats for real cowboys and celebrities as well. First is the old Stetson, Clearnutria, second is the Rand, third is the Rocky Mountain…

I can’t imagine a situation where I’d want or need a $1000 hat. But I see the attraction, they are nice hats.

Mike Miller at Northwest Hat Co. says that his 100X hats are 100% Beaver felt.
Darn good deal for a 100% Beaver hat.
He also makes a hat that is 50% Beaver felt, for less money.

For those in the market for a true custom hat, I would also suggest you look into Jaxonbilt hats, a local maker in Salmon, ID. I believe mine ran around $350 for 50% beaver and it's held up very well for almost 10 years, I got married in it and wear it frequently if not daily in the fall/winter.

Anyone own a hat from the American hat company? Never owned one. Am really tempted to buy a hat from them. They are a sponsor of a roper/entertainer I sorta know. And they stood up and did the right thing when people were trying to get him canceled for the typical crap these days. Solid hats by a solid hat company. Not custom hats but dang good hats.
